    338 lapua ?

I am thinking about buying one of these, like I really need it,l.o.l. but am trying to put together a elk hunt, don,t know anything about this caliber, I shoot a 7 mm mag but thought something with a little more range might be good. would appreciate any feed back on this. I heard that some of the special ops use this as a sniper riffle and what about ammo, is it as bad as everything else to find

Per-craze I've seen boxes of 20 go for about $85-100. And it was hard to find then, but looks fun to shoot.

Use your 7 mm and sight in using your maximum point blank range. Should be able to pull off 500 yard shots pretty easy .the 140 grains shoot flat

Far be it from me to try and talk a man out of a new gun but your 7 mag will easily kill an Elk out to 1000 yards with good optics and if you know your ballistics.

Maybe a dumb question, but what is point blank range?

The min/max distance at which you can put the crosshairs on your target and hit an area the size of the vitals. Most typical PBR is around 250-300 depending on caliber.

Lol. You need to do some serious research!! 338 lapua is more than needed. Heavy expensive rifles. Expensive ammo.

There is a ton of different calibers that will work for half the price or less and in a much more handy configuration.

IMO it is the most over rated caliber out there right now. The "coolness' of it comes from its shear size, but there are others that I think will fit most situations way better including the tiny 300 win mag.

Actually it comes from its exceptional tried and true military record. Nothin wrong with 338's on big critters.

Buddy got a Savage 338 Long Range Hunter. AWESOME rifle. Weighs bout 9 lbs and kicks like a 30-06, maybe less. Busting small bleach bottles at 900 yards on a powerline this weekend was amazing fun! Highly recommend!!

My 2 buddy's went last year and both shot bulls at 500 plus yards with 338's. They did practice a lot before the trip and had rangefinders.

400 is a chip shot for a 7mm with a good load worked up off a bipod. I have done it many times on antelope, prarie dog and mule deer. An elk is big just know your distance and your gun. check out the ballistic coefficient rating and mpb on a 140 grain bt you will be impressed.

Elk and mule deer are big you can use 5" over and 5" under without any issues
