BrettA's CHL question about mags reminded me of something I've been pondering as a newly licensed (but not yet received) permit holder. How many of you consistently carry extra magazines in addition to your CCW? If so, how many extras do you carry? If not daily, under what circumstances do you carry them?

Do You Daily Carry Extra Mags?

An extra loaded mag is always "nice" to have if a malfunction happens (a double feed requires you to release the mag, might as well throw a new one in while you are at it and behind cover.)
The smaller the mag capacity, the more mags you will want to carry on you. Single stacks are nice in this regard because you can slip one into your pant pocket without it being a big deal/noticeable. With a double stack, you get a bulge.
If you carry an extra mag, make sure it is kept on your non dominant side. Practice reloading under pressure or carrying an extra mag on you that is easily accessable is pointless.

First off carry, when ever how ever you can when you can. When you can, carry extra. When I first got my CHL I talked to several people about the same thing and talked to several LEOs, Constables, and a Congressman that where all very active in getting the CHL up in Texas years ago. Here are a few things they told me.
Statistically most incidents that involve self-defense, and where a gun is fired, less then 6 shots are fired. ( I think the number was upper %80)
During a heated situation when there was a malfunction in operation of a firearm the top 2 reasons for malfunction was the gun was not clean, and a multifunction during a "bad" reload.
So basically carry you pistol when ever you can. Keep it clean of course. If you want to carry and extra mag do it, But depending on how you look at the numbers you might want to "Re-Gun" instead.
Me, I keep my gun clean and one that is comfortable to carry. Can I take an army out of zombies with it. No. about the only time I carry an extra mag is when I am traveling and I don't know why I do it then.
