If I really wanted to tinker, I'd get a 1911. Even more possibilities and parts for them than Glock.
Absolutly, the 1911 world boggles my mind! I put extended mag releases, slide release, change a few springs and put stainless guide rod and buffer pad in my glocks. I don't do skulls and zombies either. I liked the ergonomics of the M&P pistols and although the trigger is alot better than the Sigma series, it's still a smith DAO trigger. Maybe I'm just too set in my ways....IDK.

Shane, I just did the debate/read/research for about a year on a full size semi auto, I ended up with the Glock 23. I have put exactly 400 rnds through it, would be more if I could find more as it is a blast to shoot. I have not regretted going with the 23 one bit.

the MP is considered a better pistol w/a better trigger.

The M&P Shield trigger is different than the other M&Ps - much better. There are aftermarket triggers for the M&Ps (Apex, etc) that reportedly make it nice, and there are other things to tinker with with them too. S&W says that sometime soon, the rest of the M&P line is going to get the same triggers as the Shields. That'll be good.

I'd probably shoot the 23 better than the 27 due to the longer grip. In fact, I just bought a couple 23 mags for my 27, and I have some sleeves ordered for them so they'll be gripped all the way down. I may end up like that just fine, as the sleeves are curved at the bottom instead of just going straight down like the grip on the 23. They should be a little more ergonomic. If I like the feel of those when they come in, I'll probably end up stipling the grip and sleeves and sticking with the Glock.

That doesn't mean that I won't buy something else too though.

The M&P 9c is my favorite handgun. My best friend loves Glocks, carries and almost nothing else but loves to shoot my 9c.

Have you shot a M&P 40c? If so, how'd you like that one?

Wait for them to put the trigger out of the M&P Shield in the larger framed M&P's later this year and then get one. You will be a lot happier with it.

As with bows, shoot as many as you can and buy the one you like. They are all good.

What is your favorite semi-auto pistol for carry and/or for home defense and why? I know lots of folks here love 1911s, but I'm more interested in pistols other than 1911s for this question.
I have shot many of both guns. I usually recommend Glocks but carry an M&P 40 on duty.

The handle is obviously different, mainly in the angle and the M&P can change the grips can become a lot smaller than even the Gen 4 Glock. For a lot of people the Glock doesn't point well but many times that is the way they grip the weapon.

The Glock trigger out of the box has a more definite break than the M&P but the M&P (after about 150 rounds) is a smoother trigger. The Glock definitely has a much stronger reset that can be felt and heard for people that like to use that feature.

The M&P has less barrel flip than the Glock and for most people, can get back on target quicker.

It is a toss up on which to shoot if it came down to those two. I like the trigger and less flip of the M&P and choose that one. I carried a Glock 22 for 8 years and would gladly go back to if it I was forced to change but between the two, the M&P feels better to shoot. I trust either and shoot both well.

                        I have the M&P 40, 40c, 9 and 9c. If I can ever get my hands on a Shield for less than $700, I will probably have M&P #5.

I like the 40c and have actually carried it on my duty belt instead of the full size but I normally opt for the large gun in uniform duty for the handle and carry capacity. The small 40c naturally has more recoil than the full size but not by much. We have to qualify at work with any weapons we carry including off duty. For off duty only we have a shorter (only 15 yards) and easier course of fire. I shoot the 40c on the full course out to 25 yards with timed shots and can usually shoot about the same score as with my full size.

As I mentioned above, I like shooting the 9c more than any of my other M&Ps but I carry my 40c more off duty than any other weapon.

But again, the trigger is sometimes crappy out of the box. Not always but usually. I have seen some (like my full size 40) that have a pretty good trigger out of the box.

It is not any more pounds on the trigger and it shoots fine but it grinds like the polymer trigger is rough and not broken in yet. The more you shoot it, the better it gets. Mine are now very smooth. If S&W could get the trigger out of the box like that, they might sell a lot more M&Ps.

You hear a lot of talk about M&Ps and "gritty triggers" out of the box. There are a few similar complaints about the Shield, but it has a more defined reset that's similar to the Glock reset to me. My Shield isn't gritty feeling. There are YouTube videos showing where to remove burrs to get rid of the gritty trigger, if you experience it.

I like shooting 9s better too, but I like the thought of having a .40 for carry. I've considered a .40 Shield. The only thing I don't like about the Shield is the single stack capacity.

Here's what I'd like to have in a gun:

                            1. The feel of a full-size grip that fits my hand comfortably.
                            2. The size of a Shield or similar single stack pocket-sized pistol.
                            3. A 100-round magazine.

Part of what I don't like about the Glock feel is the finger grooves. They're too close together. My hands are fairly large. Not huge, but not small. The finger grooves don't fit me right. When I end up with a finger or two riding up onto one of the humps, it makes the blocky grip even more blocky. If I end up stipling the Glock, I'll grind them off. I think that's a big reason I like the M&P grip better. No grooves and humps in the wrong places.

Trust my life to A Glock on a daily basis...not a fan of the M&P triggers, but they are fine weapons also.
