    Glock vs. M&P vs. ?

I've had a few Glocks and always like them. I recently bought my wife an M&P Shield, and I really like it too. I've been thinking about getting myself a bigger M&P or maybe some other make besides Glock. The M&P feels a lot better in my hand than a Glock does. Glock rhymes with block in more ways than one.

What is your favorite semi-auto pistol for carry and/or for home defense and why? I know lots of folks here love 1911s, but I'm more interested in pistols other than 1911s for this question.

Para for me. If the M&P feels good in your hand, that is what you need to buy. If it don't feel right, you may never shoot it a good as possible.

I have had several pistols and I always come back to my glocks. A lot of people say they look and feel like a block, but in my opinion(and I am far from an expert on pistols) I like the way it feels and it shoots everytime I pull the trigger. Reliability and durability of this gun is the reason I like it so much. It may not win the prettiest gun catagory but when the chips are down this gun will do what it was intended to do, go bang!

I like the G19 and other 9s and other mid- to large frame Glocks just fine. I recently traded for a G27, and the short grip .40 moves around in my hand a little. I could grip tape it or stiple it and maybe fix that. Or I could buy a gun that is more ergonomic already. I like Glocks' reliability too, but in all honesty, lots of guns go bang every time you pull the trigger. I don't think Glocks are the only ones that are dependable. Saturday at the range, my nephew and I shot my Glock, my Shield, and his Walther. Out of 200-300 rounds we fired, we had one fail to feed - my Glock while my nephew was shooting it. Maybe he was limp wristing it. I wasn't watching.

IMO...all guns can malfunction but I am in law enforcement and i am in a specialized division and we have to shoot a BUNCH! Over almost 10 years of training and along with 30 other guys I have never seen a Glock malfunction.

Yes, Shane there are a lot of very reliable pistols out there that go bang, I just like the way glocks fit in my hand. I have heard a lot of great things about the M&P as well, and I will probably get one when I can find one in stock.

Yeah, I'd bet $ that he was limp wristing it pretty bad to get that to happen. Either that, or he didn't have the mag seated good.

Take a look at Beretta and Kahr as well. The following are the points I look at:

                  1 Reliability
                  2 Action/Trigger
                  3 Safety
                  4 Slide Lock
                  5 Mag Release
                  6 Grip Feel
                  7 Tear down/Cleaning

You have to ask yourself questions about each gun you handle. Do I like the way it tears down for cleaning (cause you should do this often!) Can I comfortably reach the mag release, Can I reach the slide release (more importantly, do I need a slide release?) Can I thumb the saftey (more importantly, do I need a safety?) Am I happy with the trigger pull and the travel and DA/SA, DA only, etc.

I will say it can take alot of research and holding them in a store, racking, slide releasing, mag changing, (dry firing if they let you - be sure to ask!) if you don't want to spend alot of $$$ to find out later you don't like it.

BTW, always ask the guy to break it down for you and show you. If it aint easy, you probably won't be shooting it much because you will not want to clean it later. On a recent purchase this was the deciding factor all other things being equal.

There is also a ton of aftermarket parts for glocks if ya wanna soup them up a lil. The others......not so much.

We bought my wife a M&P 9c......she's put a couple thousand rounds through it without a single hickup. I actually like it so much that from time to time I'll carry it when she's not going to.

I love tinkering. For a carry or home defense gun, I tend to not want to soup it up too much. I wouldn't want Exhibit A to be my gun with skulls and crossbones and zombie killing slogans plastered on it. I'd just want it to go BANG! when I need it to.

If I really wanted to tinker, I'd get a 1911. Even more possibilities and parts for them than Glock.

I wasn't a big fan of glock until recently. One thing I do like is the simplicity. I believe there are 37 total parts total. Also just about every carries parts for them if something does fail
