Between Leupold and Nikon always choose leupold.
The new redfield's are now made by Leupold... I looked through one the other day, not a bad piece of glass.
I would also buy a used one... I bought 2 3-9x40's vx-1 bnib for 350 shipped total this week. Way better than paying full price.

I'm no expert, but the 2 scopes you listed are not in the same category. I would think the vx-2 would be more comparable to the Nikon buck master.
Is this strictly for hunting?

I have both. The Nikon is better and it ain't even close. However, the VX3 and Monarch perform almost identical to me.

I bought a 3x9 leupold VX-1 last week and had the redfield 4x12 and the Nikon 3x9 on the counter testing all 3. To me there was no contest at all the leupold showed me where my money was going!
