So when people carry their AR with EOTechs and 1,000 worth of other gear into combat (firing range) they have a good 30 round mag?? Pmags, Promag, cheap mag. If I am shooting paper or water bottles it doesn't matter to me.

Actually, I had the same question the OP had. However, at the current prices, have not seen or heard a reasonable explanation to convince me to spend the money. I am not terribly hard on my equipment, and have not had any issues with the mags provided.
I can see where if you do not take care of things, there may be a reason for them.

Good article on why gunberment won't use PMAGS but wants to copy their design. (Special forces can use them but not ordinary troops).

Basically it is acknowledged as a better design but pmag wouldn't release total control to gunberment. That didn't sit we'll... So they are trying to copy.

Why are many people trading 30 rounders for 20 rounders? Everybody wanted the 30 rounders at first. Just preference or they know something nobody else knows?

20's are not so "in the way". I have plenty of 30's for 3-gun and zombies but I hunt with 20's or 10's.

The 20 round AR mags of any manufacturer are easier to use when
shooting from a bench at a range, the magazine is shorter than a 30
round magazine and sometimes the length of a 30 round magazine will
interfere with holding and aiming the rifle correctly. It is a good idea to
have a few 20 round magazines for the range.
