If you like the gun, shoot what it likes. Depending on what you're hunting the 55gr Remingtons may be fine. I've got a Walmart special Remington 700 with a 24" sporter weight barrel that shoots them well inside an inch all day.

deer and pigs. 150yds or less. I'm sure the vmax 50gr probably shoot good but don't wanna shoot deer with them. Wish I could find some federal fusions.

I really like the gun. Gonna try some 60gr Nosler partions and some 64gr Nosler bsb.

Any other suggestions that isn't a varmint round?

Your twist should dictate what ammo it will like...I'm a 14" twist guy for the 250 / swift & try to push 52gr match bullets into the same hole.

I quit putting 22cals into the boiler room some time ago, but if I was I would likely go solid copper Barnes & not worry about the weight vs the accuracy...noggin / neck shots don't care about bullet construction :-)

I bet that gun is loud for a 22.

So your saying shoot whatever it shoots good and neck shoot them? Even if it's a varmint bullet....what about high shoulder shots?

That's exactly what I'm saying your gun should be used for if you like it...bullet construction means nothing for head / neck shots. That is why I said shoot what it likes if that is your approach.

I've shot a bunch of does with a 4000fps 220 swift into the boiler, but finally figured if one didn't drop & ran off then it's not worth losing...that same bullet at the base of the neck has almost taken the entire noggin off of does. Varmint / target bullets are little grenades at speed.

I'm figuring you gotta really hot 223 w/ a 18" tube, so you either gotta go solid copper to penetrate / bleed them out in the boiler or put them nite-nite from the Adam's apple up...imo, that is what varmint cals should be used for on deer. Neck doesn't move as much as the noggin & always prefer the white/grey patch when staring your way or the base of neck / skull looking away still stare.

I personally have always done high neck shots with my 22-250. However, I’m 90% a neck shooter anyway no matter the cartridge. One time I did put a 55gr federal blue box soft point into the vitals of a doe at about 175yds. She ran maybe 30yds and was dead. I personally wouldn’t do a high shoulder shot. High velocity and a light bullet that isn’t heavily constructed impacting a shoulder blade usually results in a grenade. Behind the shoulder is where I’d feel more confident, if I couldn’t take a neck shot.

Even with the 65gr gameking out of my 223, it was neck or behind the shoulder.

Perhaps try the 55gr Hornandy Soft point?

I have a 16.5" TC encore in 22-250 and it loves 50g soft points. Primarily a yote & doe popper but it has easily handled a handful of bucks with a heart shot.

That is what I used to think until this happened with a 8 twist 22-250AI shooting a 69 Sierra match king at 315 yards broadside. I've posted this before, but bullet took entire ear off and hog ran off. Showed back up 3 weeks later and another 68 SMK took him out quartering towards me from his right. Second bullet entered from near his right eye and the white brain matter seen in picture is from the second shot. So, while the second match bullet penetrated fine, the first simply splatter the ear off without penetrating. This may be a rare occurrence, it does show that bullet construction can make a difference with head shots.

Bullet failure is going to happen...I have no experience shooting heavier 22 bullets in hunting applications.

All I can tell you is speed kills & never seen anything run off hit in the face with 52gr out of a swift, but I'm certain others have. Bullets can do funny things.

My savage Model 12 shot the Federal Premium 55 Sierra BTHP right at 5/8". I bought a bunch on sale thru midway just for the brass for reloading, but it shot so good I haven't worried about reloading very much. I have since loaded some Lapua brass with the same Sierra BTHP, and it shoots the same or 5/8" is best I can shoot.
