If you like the gun, shoot what it likes. Depending on what you're hunting the 55gr Remingtons may be fine. I've got a Walmart special Remington 700 with a 24" sporter weight barrel that shoots them well inside an inch all day.

Your twist should dictate what ammo it will like...I'm a 14" twist guy for the 250 / swift & try to push 52gr match bullets into the same hole.
I quit putting 22cals into the boiler room some time ago, but if I was I would likely go solid copper Barnes & not worry about the weight vs the accuracy...noggin / neck shots don't care about bullet construction :-)
I bet that gun is loud for a 22.

That's exactly what I'm saying your gun should be used for if you like it...bullet construction means nothing for head / neck shots. That is why I said shoot what it likes if that is your approach.
I've shot a bunch of does with a 4000fps 220 swift into the boiler, but finally figured if one didn't drop & ran off then it's not worth losing...that same bullet at the base of the neck has almost taken the entire noggin off of does. Varmint / target bullets are little grenades at speed.
I'm figuring you gotta really hot 223 w/ a 18" tube, so you either gotta go solid copper to penetrate / bleed them out in the boiler or put them nite-nite from the Adam's apple up...imo, that is what varmint cals should be used for on deer. Neck doesn't move as much as the noggin & always prefer the white/grey patch when staring your way or the base of neck / skull looking away still stare.

Even with the 65gr gameking out of my 223, it was neck or behind the shoulder.

My savage Model 12 shot the Federal Premium 55 Sierra BTHP right at 5/8". I bought a bunch on sale thru midway just for the brass for reloading, but it shot so good I haven't worried about reloading very much. I have since loaded some Lapua brass with the same Sierra BTHP, and it shoots the same or 5/8" is best I can shoot.Last edited by BrianL; 12-23-2024, 11:49 AM.
