Speed, Speed , and more speed

I want to build a rifle that will shoot 60, 80, or 100 grain Nosler Partitions at a minimum of 3,500 fps out of a 20" barrel, suppressed, with minimal recoil. ( I don't want anything heavier than 100 grain).

I want something maneuverable, light, and short barrel (yes i know a 20" kills velocity). Calibers I've looked at so far...22 creedmoor, .240 weatherby, .257 weatherby, 6-7 powerstroke...... somebody help me decide.

I don't care about it being a barrel burner or expensive ammo or a wildcat round. This will be strictly for deer hunting only.

    What do I want?!

Are you limiting your bullet to Partitions only?

I'm not going to limit it to only Partitions, but I'm a very big fan of them. (all shots will be under 500 yds, with 97% of them being under 300.) Not a fan of the Accubonds either. Would consider Swift Scirocco's or Terminal Ascent bullets. Not a big fan of the ELD-X's, ELD-M's, Barnes TSX or TTSX.

20” barrel is really going to get in your way with the speed goal and bullets you want to use. 22 or 6 Creedmoor would be my vote

Yeah, ya normally don't discuss 3500fps with 20" barrels.

I have 7.21 firebird that shoots a 120gr Lazerhead at 3900fps, but it takes 30" of tube...no idea what the speed would be at 20", but it's just so much unused powder even if it hit 3500. It would be like wanting a 20" in 220 swift to get 3500.

First thing that comes to mind is a 243 catbird. I’m not sure if you can get the velocity out of a 20” barrel though.

Yeah that’s a tough order. Not sure it’s doable, but might look at a fast powder in a 6.5-284 Norma with 80 gr Hammer Hunters. Might even be able to do that in a short action with such a light bullet.

FYI I’m getting about 3700fps out of a 243AI shooting 75gr bullets but that’s from a 26” tube. I have been considering cutting it down to 20” also.

you might build big 22 cal and shot 60gr portions but my worry would be that at those velocities that it would come apart on impact.

I was looking and considering that very thing... 22 creedmoor shooting the 60 gr partitions. I feel confident though, even at those speeds, the Partition would be the bullet that I would bet good money would stay together.

has anyone ever heard of a 6-7 powerstroke? There's one vid on youtube detailing the round....supposedly 4,000fps with 80 gr ELD-VT in a 22" barrel. They necked down a 7PRC to a 6mm?

What about a 22PRC, not sure what the actual performance would be but could to what you’re looking for. Easy to form with bushing die off 6PRC. One thing to consider with this is if you do a short action you could go a little longer on barrel as it would compare overall to a long action with 20” barrel

22 creed is on the gas pedal with 80.5 berger full bore but I doubt you’ll see 3500 with 20”

                          You won’t. I getting 3200 fps with a 75 grain bullet (18 inch barrel)

I'm thinking you might have trouble stabilizing that range of bullet lengths at the speed you want. To stabilize the longer bullets with faster twist barrel may be too much for the shorter bullets.

6.5 prc 85 hammer or maker would be close. Honestly would go 6.5 creed with same 85 gr coppers, less recoil.
