Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and as Nat Stuckey said “false eyelashes and a false foundation” makes a gal look better, so the mounting of a scope on a Savage makes it look so much better. Scopeless, they look unfinished, but scoped they look at least like they came to play.

I also shoot and carry polymer pistols but my true loves are single action revolvers. So, to answer your question……yes, you are old fashioned, and it’s alright ! If, for some ungodly reason I had to give up all my rifles except one, and all my handguns except one, I would be left with a Winchester Big Bore 94 in .375 Winchester and a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt. But I don’t have to, so I’ll continue to have a mix of old and new, ‘cause I would really hate to give up my ARs in 6.8 SPC and my G20, or my S&W M&P 10 mm, or……….
And for the record, I think most of the long range rifles are uglier than Hillary Clinton !

I have my fair share of plastic/synthetic stock rifles, ARs and one in a chassis. My go to hunting rifle is a Ruger American, just for the reason that I’m not worried about the stock getting dinged or nicked. It’s a work horse.
I am with you though. You just can’t beat the look of what I call the “quintessential” deer rifle. Gloss wood stock, gloss blue finish and a gloss black scope. It’s a shame you can’t find gloss black scopes anymore. I have my share of wood stocked rifles, as does my dad. Of course, he rides around in the mule during deer season with his Weatherby MkV Deluxe and I cringe thinking about the bumps and scuffs it’s picking up. But, some would say that’s the character that’s added to a rifle. I tend to baby my wood stocked rifles. I use a soft case for rides to the stand, take it out to hunt, then back in the case for the ride back to the trailer.

Same with all the new cartridges. American Hunter magazine seems to have an ad for a new cartridge in each issue. And, in this issue it had a telling article about folks who are eaten up with long distance shooting but insist on using light (and inappropriate) calibers, resulting in lots of wounded animals.
Guess I'm just getting old--
