Had my local gun store (3five7 in Katy, TX) build me an Aero Precision 308 with a 16" stainless competition barrel. The weight of the barrel keeps down the rise when issuing multiple shots.
It's my go to pig rig.

A 6.8 SPC will stomp the 5.56 at longer ranges but up close and under 100 yards not much difference except the 6.8 will make a bigger hole and penetrate better. The 6.8 only requires a new upper with BCG and you have a 2 in 1 platform.

I'm really curious to see if anything comes of this new 6mm Max Sons of LIberty has been hyping up. Seems to compete with 6.5G and 6 ARC without the bolt busting issue those have.

I built an AR-10 with an aero upper and lower. Spent way too much money doing it, but had a blast. I earholed a smallish bobcat at 180 yds tonight with my pulsar thermal. It’s heavy, but it’s awesome.

My Armalite AR-10T has a 20” stainless barrel. I added an adjustable gas block and Timney drop in replacement trigger. Topped it with a Leupold LR mil-dot scope with 30mm tube. It shoots sub moa out beyond 200 yards using factory Hornady and Federal Fusion 150 gr. Ammo. It is my go-to gun for larger game. Love the set up.

Having said all that my favorite go to black hunting rifle is my AR Performance 16” 6.8 SPC II shooting Hornady Custom 120gr. SST ammo. Consistently shoots 3/8” 5-shot groups at 100 yards. It’s a deer, hog, coyote, cat killing machine! And it’s much lighter than the AR-10.

I feel like it may fall a little short. Don’t get me wrong, it looks to be a pretty good one. But I think it’s less than ideal timing. If it had been developed prior to the ARC, it would stand a better chance for sure. First of all, I just don’t think there has been ARC bolt failures like has been hyped up. Second, it looks like it “might” be suited better for a little lighter weight projectiles than the ARC. Now, if there was an attempt to use the ARC in a heavy use service duty weapon, I bet we might see more bolt failures. But for what most people use them for, I don’t think the numbers are there to warrant a change from the ARC. It simply has the very capable Hornady backing that most others don’t have access to and/or are capable of. Just my $.02.

Agree with all of your points

I hope I don't get flamed for this, but the lightweight barrels from bear creek arsenal are way lighter than anything else I've seen in the ar 10 world. I just put together a side charge upper with the lightest barrel I could find in 6.5 creed. Barrel is 22 inch and it weighs a pound more than a ar 15 with a 16 inch M4 barrel. I did skinny up on every component I could. She has the thermal mounted up, but I haven't shot it yet. I have had good luck with bear creek, I've used a bunch of their stuff with very little issues.

As far as AR 10s go I built mine in 7mm-08 with a Wilson Barrel and Aero Precision upper and lower. I passed on 308 because I like the 7mm-08 and have a bolt action in that caliber. Its heavy but everything that I've shot at went down. My go to for pigs is a Wilson Combat .300 ham'r followed by my 6.8 SPC. Had a 6.5 Grendal but didn't care for it as much as the others so it went away.
In the end go with what you want. They all work and we all have different reasons for liking what we like.

Get a .458socom upper and you’ll be good to go

I'd look into just swapping out the upper on your 5.56 because if you have to carry around that heavy AR-10 plus a tripod or whatever you use to rest the gun on its going to get old. They make some pretty good cartridges that will smoke hogs but will still use the same platform you have. .224 Valkyrie,6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39 to name a few. If most of your shots are 200 yards and in I'd look at the 7.62x39. Especially if you reload because you can buy the cheapest steel cased ammo available and not have to worry about picking up the brass at night.

I have a 450 Bushmaster, 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39 and 5.56 uppers. I bought dies for the 7.62x39 dies and put 123 grain SST bullets on steel case cases that I pulled bullets on which shoot better than some fmj ammo I have tried. I found one bullet that runs really good in that upper but it’s factory ammo that some don’t look at for accuracy. My Grendel shoots decent with the Eld-x rounds. I know for a fact that my .450 kills the crap out of deer which out the f my uppers it is really the only one that has killed enough animals to draw a real opinion on caliber/ammo combo.
I really need to handload my .450 because as good as factory ammo kills, handloads can produce so much more power and performance to the .450.
