Looking at An AR10 to replace my 5.56mm

Want something with a bit more punch for nighttime hog hunting and looking at the .308 AR 10. Anyone have any advice or insight on them?

The diamond back on sale right now on here looks like a good price. Depending on barrel length. AR-10’s get a bad rap for being heavy but they don’t have to be built that way.

Savage and Ruger make some that are lightweight right out of the box.
I have an Armalite with a 16 inch barrel that only weighs a pound and a half or so more than my 15’s.

when trying to shoot rapid multiple shots, my experience in the 308 round the recoil will lift the site off of target as to where they AR-15 rounds you can keep the crosshairs on the target. But that might just be me.

Look at the Ruger SFAR .308 closer to AR15 weight.

I bought a Ruger sfar a while back. So far it functions fine. Accuracy is around 1.5 inches at 100. I really haven’t had time to work up any loads to see if the accuracy would improve. But it’s good enough for nighttime hog hunting. I need to mount my thermal on it. With the thermal and a suppressor it’s still going to be pretty hefty. But not as bad as a full size ar10.

I've got a DPMS LR 308 that I'll let go. It has a Nikon P-308 scope on it. Let's go a different route on this one. What will you pay. I'm out of town right now. I have the dies, 4 20 rd mags, dang nice case for it, a pretty good 4064 165 Hornady recipe to go with it, plus bore snake and other stuff that I can't remember off the top of my head.
I'm just an old fart that can't find the handle on this AR system.

They are heavy ! My 6.8 SPC has killed every hog that I’ve shot in the right place. I’ve shot hogs with a .280 Rem and a .300 WSM that got away. It’s the shot placement that counts. That said, I agree that the .223/5.56 is too light for anything bigger than coyotes and I even use my 6.8 on them.

If the OP passes, I might be interested in the DPMS.

Palmetto State all day. I have one in their 20 inch stainless flavor. For your use, I’d go with the 18” for weight saving. Mine shoots Federal Premium 175 grain SMK in 1/2” five shot groups one after another.

I have a Palmetto State Arms AR-10 that is just sitting in my safe that I’d be willing to sell. Let me know if you’re interested.

I just looked on PSA’s website and they have an AR-10 for $839. I think I paid $1100 for mine a few years ago so it’d be cheaper for you to just go buy a brand new one. I mean, I’d sell it for prob $1000 but that doesn’t make sense for you.

Honestly, I’d skip the AR 10, buy a 6.5 Grendel upper and swap it over to the lower you already have.

the Grendel will work fine on hogs, plus it’ll be lighter weight than the 10 platform. The recoil isn’t much different than a 5.56 either.

I have both a 10 in 7.62x51 and a 15 in 6.5 G. The 10 hasn’t been out of the safe in a long time, no need for it really.

                            Agree with Twist above.

or, a 6.8 upper. Been seeing lots of ammo on the shelves as of recent. But it has been a ghost when ammo has been hard to find. Just an FYI.

I have a 16" diamondback DB10 in 308. Definitely heavier than an ar15, but not too bad. Mine has a smaller scope and a lighter barrel. A 20 inch with a big optic is heavy. Mine shoots 1.5" with some ammo but is 1" with norma whitetail. Only knock against it is its a armalite style slant cut upper/lower instead of the more common dpms pattern so extra uppers aren't easy get. I've been happy with it.
