First post/question on this side of the ranch.

So I haven't shot a rifle in years yet I own many times more than my wife is aware of. (I don't count her shoes so it works) Recently bought a new 30-06 as well as a gong, rubber straps and built a stand. The gong swings free on the two straps. I've been trying to sight it in at 100 yards but I might get two shots before the straps rip apart. I have to be doing something wrong. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Use some chain.

I use old fire hose. Your local fire department may have some you can get or you can order some on eBay.

I've used the rubber from a tire sidewall. If you are tying the strap thew the holes on the gong they will take a lot of abuse from spatter. You might try some eyebolts with the eye on the back side of the target then tie your straps to the eye.

Make sure the straps are on the back of the target to avoid most of the splash.

Put a spacer between the strap and the plate to slightly cant the top of the target forward, again to get the splash away from the straps.

T-posts or 2x4 Target mounts work a lot better than hanging from a strap/chain IMO. If you want to hang it, fire hose or conveyer belt material is what you want.

Side note: It’s a lot easier sighting in on Paper than it is on steel. Save the steel for some long range fun after you get it sighted in.

We use Firehose too. Ordered on line and it was pretty cheap. At least 1000 rounds since we out out our metal gong targets and no issues at all. We have them from 25 yards out to 200.

Agree 100%. A metal gong is not for sighting in.

It's a 3006, you're going to break s*** at 100 yards. Sight it in on paper at that distance, move your steel plate out to 2 or 300 yards and you'll have a lot less breakage

Same as above. Move the target further out and use either old fire hose or old reinforced conveyor belt with washers and lock nuts.
