I am looking at possibly booking a ram hunt with Thomson Temple with Mac... and was wondering if anyone could give me their experience there and how are the animals. I am not able to buy an expensive ram and was wondering if there is a good selection of rams without tags or with less expensive tags? What is the best time of year to try to hunt rams? Any input is appreciated.

Does he still offer the 199.00 hunts? It use to be based on color of ear tag. Easy hunt, shoot the one you want and pay, not much to it. My best suggestion besides not going is finding a motel, like in Campwood. I would hate for you to bring "something" back to your family. Yeah I have been, so I don't go by what others just talk. Not for me, but...........best of luck.

Im not gonna lie to you bro but Thompson Temple isnt the best accomidations in the world. The trailer is falling apart and the A frame down the road has a pole in the middle you have to climb to get to the loft. There are some mice. But your in the middle of no where ....be glad its not a chubacabra. When its colder the rodents arnt that bad. I didnt even see one this last trip(feb 25-27th). But its dirt cheap. No where else can you go for 100 dollars for 2 days and see this many rams.Yes most of them are tame and yes we have petted a few in the 5 times i have been. You can hike your but off and work alittle harder to travel the back mountains and find a willie one also. But its fun. I go for the Family and friends and getting to together away from it all. Most of the group that goes with us works together and if not they are friends or family of someone that is.

It is a great place to bring a beginning hunter (young or old) and also to pass the time between season and touch up on your spot and stalk skills. Kinda like shooting a 22 LR in the off season to help with your accuracy. There are some nice rams there and you can spend as little or as much as you like. I personally think they make excellent mounts and exciting hunting with a bow. Its not for everybody...this is true...but i say give it a shot and form your own opinion. To each his Own Bro!

I'm one of the few that loves Thompsons.
The accomodations do suck, but I'm not there to get a mint on my pillow.
The hunt can be as easy or as hard as you want to make it.
You can sit in the bottom of the mountain pasture and wait for the rams to come down to eat or you can hike to the back of the place and try your spot-n-stalk skills.

Some people do. I've been told they make good tamales, sausage, and barbacoa. Thompson claims they're very edible and if he's got a skinner there, he'll get him to gut and skin anything the hunters don't want and he takes it to a shelter, somewhere. Personally, I've never tried it. I usually give the meat to someone that wants it, on the hunt or leave it with Thompson to either give to the shelter or discard.

His prices go from a 190 ram which is a no tags to a yellow tag .....which simply says ask thompson for pricing(usually around 1400) The red tags are around 260 blue tags are 360 and then you get into the Mountain Pasture(high Dollar Pen) and a orange tag is 500 a green is 650 and then ....there are the yellow tags!!!!!!!!!!!!!Sometimes you get lucky and find a decent ram with out a tag they may have lost it or just been there so long he has grown up a bit. It may be a 3 curl ram but if it doesnt have a tag its 190.....same goes for all the other rams......he may look like a monster but he is what he is and if his ear tag has a color in it then thats the price you pay.
Rams do not move around like deer do....so the time of year to go really depends on how cold or hot you wanna be. Thats why we always book in feb or early march. Wheather is usually pleasant....ohh yeah and then theres the gut pile!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If its hot or even warm its kida rank and its near camp...so something else to think about if you wanna bring your woman....she might not appreciate smelling BUTT!!!!!!!!!! all day long........you got my number dude so call me if you have any more questions!Last edited by haztech3; 04-26-2011, 10:16 PM.
