As years pass, I’ve found great enjoyment going back through former live hunt threads of mine and reliving those hunts. It’s with that premise I’ve decided to do a live hunt on this draw!
After a decade of apply, I finally drew a management hunt in the dreaded “pending second draw” drawing. I was shocked to say the least. Although the Chap was my preference for this hunt, I’m really excited to experience this new to me area.
Learning compartment selections were based on draw order, I was prepared to get the gar hole of compartments seeing as I drew in the second drawing. Luckily for me, 4 hunters backed out paving the way for a 5th in order selection. Having no experience here, I immediately went to work researching compartments and reaching out to TBHers who have experience at this WMA. I developed a top 5 list so I could select quickly when my selection email came through. Right in line with my top 5 went the selections, as I was left my #5 choice in unit 10. With my known compartment, I started building my area on the HuntStand app marking areas of interest and TBH recommendations.
I leave tomorrow morning early with my travel trailer in tow. I’ll be staying at an RV park near the WMA. For this hunt, I’ll be toting my tried and true, go-to, never let me down Browning Abolt 280. I’ll also be packing my Browning Abolt (yes, I’m a fan) 22 hornet for pigs, yotes, and a potential close shot on a doe. Plan is to sit stationary at a location for much of the morning, then slip out to rattle/spot and stalk, finishing stationary again for the afternoon hunt. Weather will likely make any midday movement unlikely with the high temps, but with the rut just beginning to commence down there you never know. Hunt starts after orientation on Tuesday, wrapping up at dark on Thursday.
Keep your greenscreen up for this one and tune in, and hopefully I’ll be able to provide some cheap mid-week entertainment!
