Any feedback on the first hunt at trinity? Curious on how wet it was, and was there some success?

It’s gonna be real dry unless it rains next week. I went back on the 24th i think and its was already much drier. I was able to ride a bike back in there without issue.

And always been compartments hunting for me there. One time they gave me the combo to the gate, other times they would follow me over and unlock it so I could drive in.

I stopped by the check station at lunch today on my way out and nobody had harvested anything yet based on the log book.
I thought it was interesting that 3 or 4 of the deer harvested during the first hunt did not meet the antler requirements of being outside of the ears. One was 13”, one 14” and one 15” but the ear width on that one was over 16”. There were only 7 total harvested I think(maybe 8) from both units.

The more public hunts I get drawn for the more I appreciate the challenge
Despite what many folks say about the draw system I have always appreciated the opportunity to get to hunt different areas in our state.
This week has been incredible. I’ve been hunting this area for 25 years, we have property 7 miles from the rc wma and I’ve never seen deer rut so hard this early in the year. I haven’t hunted the north unit in more than 10 years and it has changed a lot since then. It took me two days to zero in on where I needed to be but when I did there was non stop action.
E-postcard was a good change , you can be more patient and pattern the deer. This will mark 5 deer in my wall from TPWD hunts in 14 years.

Congrats on the great buck!
Tuesday was the single best day of hunting I’ve had without shooting anything. It was nonstop action all day. I think I saw 30 deer and about half were bucks including a handful of mature bucks. Unfortunately I was set up about 50 yards from where I needed to be so all I could do was watch from a distance.
I saw a couple of young bucks harassing does but the big guys were just cruising. I had a huge buck working a scrape about 75 yards away so I grunted at him. I looked the other direction and a 16-17” wide 8 was coming right towards me and stopped and just stood there at 15 yards waiting for me to shoot it. I had to pass though with the hope that the other one would come in but of course he finished his scrape, turned and walked out of my life.
Since the wind direction changed back from the South again and it started warming up things have slowed way down for me.

I passed on this guy three different times Tuesday morning
I had to drive back to deer park after the Tuesday morning hunt to watch my sons football game so I missed the evening hunt. I had two cameras running and it was non stop pics of bucks at both spots all day long
He came back at 4:00 Tuesday evening and stayed at my set until dark, I thought for sure he would be back Wednesday morning and I’d decided to shoot him if he gave me a shot
He would never give me a look at his ears laid out , he would pen them back every time he picked his head up, the biologists are very clear that the they have to be outside the ears to be legal there. After watching more footage I decided he would just make it.
