It sucks for people that have been applying for years and building up points. I have 14 points for 3 different catagories because I only apply for the top end ranches that have the best reputation of harvesting a trophy animal. We are ****ed if we do and ****ed if we dont.
I can apply for multiple hunts within the same unit but than I would be giving up 14 years of waiting for the best ranch if I draw on an average hunt. The top end ranches now have an average of 1-3% success draw rate with this new system.
It is great for the average meat hunter that can apply for anything and everything but horrible for my situation trying to kill a true trophy.

There were a few hunts were I figured around the 6pp mark I'd stand a fair chance of drawing every year. Now I may be lucky to ever draw a hunt. Between me and my hunting partner we put right around $100 in every year and that's just applying one per category. I could easily see putting in 1-2K and never even sniffing a hunt. It's not going to stop me but it is discouraging.

Take this example and apply it to just about every hunt available and see how your odds of drawing drop.
        Exactly!

If you have 14 points, wouldn't you still have a much better chance of drawing the one hunt you want than all these new people who are now applying for multiple different hunts in a category?

I think the way the preference points work is, if you have 14 points, then your name would be put in 14 times ( I think).

So if before you had 500 people putting in and now you have 1000 people putting in, and your name still only goes in 14 times, your odds would be about half as "good" as they were before.

They should look at a real preference point system where the people with the most points get drawn first, what tags are left go to the people with the next most and so on till all tags are distributed.

the old point system sucked too, people on here could get drawn for the Chap two years in a row, with no points, and i had like 12 and couldnt get drawn for a 50/50 unit!

That is my point and correct. 14 points means your name goes in 14 times, except now it's more like it went from 1000 to 3000. For example I want the mule deer real bad. Forever it was 3 ranches that you could only pick one out of, now it's just everyone applies to all 3.... Even worse for gun deer where there is a dozen or more. People would pick meat hunts over trophy hunts because they knew the odds were very hard drawing a trophy unit, now they just apply for all of them and it doesn't make sense for me to waste 14 years of trying to go shoot a doe or fork horn.

Come on Guys...glad you are not applying

The odds are still good. Last year alone I won an axis hunt to Garner, management hunt to Gus Engleng, bowhunt to Kerrville shreiner park, and a bowhunt at Richland Creek.

                      UNDER THE NEW SYSTEM!

And no I did not apply to a thousand places. Watch your points, play the statistics, and be happy about how easy it is to now log on and apply.

BTW..did ya'll notice that richland creek is not on the list this year. That is disappointing. I have won hunts there multiple times and love that place.

                        Statistics

The other question I have is statistically does it actually help out?

If for example prior to the new system my odds were 1:100 or 1% chance of winning but after the new system the number of people applying double. Now my odds are 1:200 or 0.5%. But if I can apply for 3 new places. Then my odds are 0.5% + 0.5% + 0.5%. My odds of winning are now increased overall to 1.5%?

Or is that not how statistics work... I think I slept through that class.

I won a hunt last year under the new system and my kids scored some youth hunts after not being drawn for seven years, so I haven't seen the downside. The hunt I drew last year was with zero points since I drew the same hunt the year before. I too have a bunch of points in other categories that I haven't been drawn in, but that's how the cookie crumbles.

I agree. It's become a real PITA and success rate is a joke now. If I didn't have 10-12 points in like 6 cat's I'd probably quit trying Lol

I don't fully agree it's a failure. I won an Antlerless/Spike hunt at Honey Creek and I applied at 3 places under that category. But that is the only hunt I was drawn for. In the old system year before I was drawn for 2 hunts. I like being able to apply at more than one place because my calendar window to hunt is a small one. Dates have to fall after football season and before all the spring sports start.

Absolutely agree with the OP, they need to go back to the old system, and I absolutely hate the e-postcard, ridiculous.
