Well after a very long week we are off to the Asa tournament. Thanks everyone for the well wishes and prayers. The support I received from all our friends have really made me feel special. We stopped at the casino on the way there and asked mom if to give us a sign. And sherry won 400 bucks right out of the gate. So we ran out and said save that sign for foley!!! Lol

Great write up Michigan. One day I need to head out there.

Well, Rachel and I have been working our tails off getting ready for the wedding.
Check engine light came on....gonna take $1800 to replace 2 secondary air injectors, switching valves, intake gasket and coolant.

Dam. Was serving brisket, chicken and sausage...now it may be cat food.

          Dangit, I just can't catch a break.

Well it's not terribly exciting! There were a ton of guys there on Sunday hiking aimlessly around the area. Most had their bows strapped to their backpacks and I think I only saw one guy with binoculars. I did see 2 rams and a bunch of nannys and young ones, but every time I got within 100yds and thought I may get a shot someone hiked through and bumped them.

I left when the rain started and spent the night in a $24 walmart tent hoping the rain didn't find it's way in and the wind didn't blow it flat.

Monday morning I was on sheep immediately and was in front of a fairly young ram that was slowly feeding towards me at about 120 yds. I was thinking about the best way to cook mouflon when 3 guys came walking through and scared him to Mexico. I got frustrated and considered heading home. I decided to head to a small area that I hadn't been to yet. It was the only place I had yet to see other hunters. I immediately found a small group of nannys and decided that I would attempt a stalk even though I was hoping to shoot a ram. Again as I slipped under 100yds, the sheep looked into the ravine below them and headed over the ridge. Looking into the ravine I expected to see a hunter but instead I found a whitetail spike. Apparently he wasn't their type lol. Click image for larger version

The sheep had gone towards the lake and were running out of real estate quickly. Knowing they were in a small area I moved in slowly feeling like this was my best opportunity. As I worked my way along the top of the shoreline, I spotted them about 90yds ahead of me marching single file over the top of the ridge I was on angling back towards me. I slipped down the other side and set up above the trail they were on. I ranged the trail at 60 yds and got in position to draw. Finally I was sure I was alone with these sheep and I was certain my hunt was about to come to completion. I watched the first 15 or so sheep walk through without stopping. Finally a large nanny stopped at the exact point I had ranged. I drew and settled my 60yd pin behind her shoulder and took my shot. The shot felt wrong immediately and I watched my arrow sail a full 3 feet to her left. My arrow skipped off of a rock and launched into outerspace. I sat in disbelief. I had hiked so many miles and had so many frustrating stalks. I could not believe it. I know there are no gimmes in bowhunting, but a broadside standing target at 60 yds is a shot I'm 100% confident in. I assumed I had bumped my sight in the miles of rough hiking. I was completely exhausted and ready to give up. It was lunch time so I headed back to pack up camp and pack everything into may car. I got back to the tent and pulled my bag target out to check my bow. 60 yds... 3 arrows inside the 4" ring. It made things worse knowing I had made some sort of mechanical error that ruined my chance. When I finished packing camp up it was 2pm. I needed to be on the road by 5, so I had one more chance to hunt. I got to the parking area and was suprised to see I was the only hunter! I headed back out and within 20 minutes I had glassed up a large group. They fed across a large open area and started up a ravine. I immediately moved into the ravine next to them and hustled about 500yds to the top. I moved down the ridge to the top of the ravine they were in. I pulled up my binoculars to look for them and saw a small sheep cross over the top of the ridge in front of me. I ranged it at 60 yds and prepared to draw waiting for the next sheep to pass through. Unfortunately the next 15 sheep crossed between 80 and 90 yds. 80yds is the limit of my effective range and I prefer to stay within 70. Knowing there were only 3 or 4 sheep left in the group I decided if I could get a clear standing shot at 80 I would take it. The next sheep to step out was at exaclty 80 and stopped in an opening broadside looking away from me. I settled my pin and squeezed my release trigger. The arrow took about 15 minutes to get to her but when it did it literally knocked her over. There was pure chaos after that. Sheep running in every direction. I wasn't sure where I had hit her or exactly where she went after she left the top of the ridge. When the dust settled I slowly moved down the ridge to where she had been standing. I could see the sheep all standing on a parallel ridge about 100 yds away. As they moved up the ridge I could see her standing with her head down not moving. I slowly moved into about 50 yds and watched her bed down. Her head and neck were all I could see above the brush. I still wasn't sure where I had hit her so I put another shot in her neck and dropped her instantly. When I walked up to her I found my first shot had passed through her shoulder and stopped in the opposite shoulder. It was sweet redemption making a good shot after the heartbreak earlier in the day. Within 30 minutes I had her skinned and boned out. I got back to the car at just about exactly 5pm.

And fyi I threw a shoulder in the crockpot overnight and made gyros yesterday and they were AMAZING.

It was an amazing experience and I can't wait to go next year. Maybe a couple of you fine tbh gentlemen could join me!

And I skipped the blackbuck and the huge tom I had on video. Another great memory. I actually got a ton of great footage. Pretty much everything except the shot. That was somewhat dissappointing but I can't complain.

I love challenging and frustrating hunts. It seems like you have more invested which leads to a bigger withdrawl when you succeed.

Enough of a write up Kevin? Lol

Sounds like the kind of hunting I would prefer to be doing. I'd love to get to some wide open that you can make a real spot and stalk. I've never done that. This E Tx thicket isn't quite suitable for what I have in mind. Honestly, I'm tired of sitting in a stand waiting for a shot. I'd rather be glassing and then chasing.

I should have some more vacation time next year. Maybe we can get a couple guys together and make a run at them.

Now that we're on our own, the boys are getting a healthy dose of deer. 11 mo ths old and gobbling it down. I think we're going to run out of meat fast!

I dint know about yall but this week was productive for me. I finished up a fishing rod, made my new strings for my bow and even made a little money with my bow press. Can't complain about that
