Took the nephew out this morning, first time since the youth hunt. Got him on the stand, after a close brush with some swine. I handed him the crossbow, while I was trying to pull my own bow up. All of a sudden I hear this incredibly loud pop, and I was like what in the heck was that? I lean around the tree, and I can see that there is no longer a bow string on the front on the Horton crossbow. He had just dry fired it, and the sun had not even come up yet. Well there was nothing I could say, or do, except "We're gonna have to trade spots now." He was gonna be the spectator, and I was now the hunter. I know he just sat there not believing what he had just done.
Good news is he realizes that crossbow don't just accidentally go off, and he was at fault. Bass Pro had one in stock and put it on for me. While in school he only works 1-2 days a week, so I think I'll probably split the $50 with him. I think he needs to have a little vested interest in making sure that this never happens again.
bulletpusher, my boys crossbow has some sort of anti-dry fire. It will not let the trigger be pulled unless there is a bolt all the way against the string. I didn't know anything about crossbows when I bought it for him, but I am glad it is there. Make sure the limbs are ok before you let him touch it again. When we bought my boys crossbow, the lady at Cabelas touched the string with a knife as she was cutting the zip tie off. It cut the string and cracked the limb. We ended up getting a different one.
I may hunt tonight, but I have to be a little ways up the road at 6:30. I figure I could be late, but if I get a deer I may be more than late.
Any of you guys park next to me last night (white ford or dark chevy)? The guys walking in and talking at 4:15 bumped a hog that bulldozed by at about 100 yards. That is all I saw. It felt good last night. The acorns were falling under the tree I was hunting, but there were none left on the ground from the day before. The only thing on the ground were these funny looking black beans.
I saw 120" of typical bone on a hitch rack last night, but it wasn't mine. Anyone want to fess up? Don't worry, I won't tell where you were.
I hunted Tuesday morning. Saw a 6 pt that didn't meet AR. Saw a nice doe but I let her walk when I saw her faun. He was just a lil guy. probably should have shot her. faun prob'ly won't make it anyway. Saw a nice rack later but only thru the trees.
After I left I went over to oak grove and caught some nice catfish. I wish I had weekdays off more often.
