Saw alot of movement today north of the Corp on some private land. Had both an 8 and 9 pt chasing does and glimpse of a nice 10 pt briefly (outside of bow range) before he slipped off.

                    Here's what happened:

I shoot a Mathews Monster 70# 30 in draw. My arrow weight is around 470 gr. I'm getting around 320's fps which equals around 108 # of KE. You'll see why I mentioned that in a sec.

I was shooting 2 blade bloodrunners. Had 3 deer cross a trail 50 yards away this morning. They came back 30 mins later. The lead doe was making her way torwards me. She got within 30 yards when she heard me move (my fault). She kinda spooked back to where the other deer were.

Just then, another doe stepped out in my shooting window (not lane). I guessed it to be around 50 yards so I adjusted my one pin sight to 50. I regularly shoot out to 85 with this setup. Even at 85 yards, the arrows are still a pain in the butt to pull out.

Anyway, I drew back, settled the pin tight on the shoulder and touched it off. Right off the bat, I knew something wasn't right. The arrow cork-srewed to its target making a loud whislting sound. It didn't mattered becuz the doe very reacted until after being hit.

I watched as the nockturnal came to a stop in the shoulder. I've taken shoulders out with the same setup, but the penetration wasn't there due to the cork screwing.

I found my arrow and determined the cause of the cork-screw flight was one of the retaining screws in the bh was missing. Then it dawned on me, I was sharpening the bhs a couple of weeks ago and forgot to screw that screw back in . My mistake. Hope she makes it. I was shocked to see I didn't get a pass thru.

                    sigh....

It happens to the best of us. Props to you for marketing a shot where you aimed at 50yrds! I does suck though that the broad head was jacked up. Like you said, I hope she recovered and I'm sure she will, the are extremely tough animals. Stay positive and focused brother!

                              Congratz, dsanderson80!

In regards to the night hunting question according to Kenneth Myers (the guy in charge of answering hunter's questions for GV) there is no hunting at night allowed. I emailed him and asked because I was told by a young man that I spoke with at my truck last weekend that he had been told my the be GW that it was okay to hog hunt out there at night after the season.

Kenneth.Myers@usace.army.mil is the email address if you want to ask for yourself...

I am pretty sure they put a dog on it, just wasnt a dead deer. The dogs went 0-2 yesterday I think.

I put mine down on a deer too but we tracked for a long long ways without any blood. I forgot to turn on my GPS but I am guessing it was over a mile before we called it off. I was fully covered but still look like I lost a fight with a chain saw. 40 yards into the track my dog started barking and really locked in so I thought we would find a deer pretty quick. At about 150 yards he barked and dug in again. I thought we might be bumping the deer by the way he was acting but I really dont think we were. The dog found a spot that he acted like was a bed but there was no blood at all just a bare spot on the ground. We tracked through some really nasty stuff and crossed water once and climbed up a freaking wall of dirt LOL. A lot of the time we were on trails but the trails were built for something shorter than me and a lot less wide!!! The deer made almost a perfect circle and ended up maybe 200-300 yards from where we started but across a un passible piece of water. At this point me and the hunter both agreed that the deer wasnt going to call it quits anytime soon. The shot was low in heart area and spun away from the hunter. From looking at the arrow with a couple sets of eyes, we think that the arrow probably entered behind the shoulder but as the deer spun, it went directly behind the shoulder blade without entering vitals. The arrow got about 8-10 inches of penetration before getting spit back out. Lots of white hair on the arrow. We went out there after my son's baseball game (missed second game) and thought we might could get a track in without screwing up anyone's hunting but we ended up walking through on ttguy who was really cool about it and even helped in the search. I wish we would have found it and I was really disappointed but unfortunately you arent going to find them all. I hope someone gets another look at this one later in the season.

                                Chris
