No luck on recovery. No hair or blood where he shot her and we grid searched for about an hour and a half. We didn’t find any blood or hair yesterday on the cow we recovered and she only went 70 yards and crashed so who knows.

Making a location change for this evening to hope and find a good whitetail buck and look at some different scenery. Wind is supposed to shift and tomorrow will be much cooler in the morning so hopefully it gets them moving.

He shot a small 6 point tonight. With maybe only a morning hunt left and it being the first buck we saw, he said it was time to punch his buck tag. It’s not a S Texas giant or even close, but if he’s happy with it, I’m happy with it.

Slow hunt for us this morning back where my son shot the nilgai on day 1. We saw a cow this morning but wrong direction and a long ways off.

A kid east of us shot a young buck this morning and to my knowledge there are only 3 kids still hunting this afternoon. Other group I spoke to today had seen some good bucks just not the right shot oppty.

We are back at that same spot this afternoon for one last hurrah.

That’s a wrap for La Sal Del Rey.

We almost got a shot on a doe late tonight……two does and 3 bucks came out but stayed back in the tall grass. We had to move the gun to shoot a different direction and just had a neck shot but at only 70 yards. Fixing to squeeze one off and one of the bucks chased her off.

Couple relaxing days on private late to celebrate New Years and then on to Teniente.

We were fortunate on the refuge draws this year and my older son has LRGV NWR-La Sal Del Rey hunt starting tomorrow through the 29th and I drew LRGV NWR-Teniente Archery 1/2-5.

We drove down today and did a little scouting this afternoon and got set up at a spot some TBH'ers have had some great success at over the past couple of years so hopefully that luck continues for us. We saw a couple of groups of nilgai and a group of does walking around after we got set up today.

Will try and keep this as live as possible and hopefully have some LPDs to share along the way.
Congrats on to your son on an excellent hunt. My son and I hunted Teniente on the Dec 5th-8th hunt. I didn't have a lot of activity on the East tract. Seemed like several packs of coyotes call that area home. I had more Coyote than much else. He and others had more significant nilgai encounters in the middle tract. Didn't hear much about the West side tract. Hope that helps at least for a place to start scouting.

Great hunt for your boy! Congratulations!

If you don't mind my asking, how many points did he have? I had my older and younger daughters applied for that hunt and they had 4 and 2 points for an average of 3.

Hopefully they can pull it next season!

                    Congrats again!

He had 5 points and actually drew it on the second draw.

Thank you guys for the congratulations. It was a fun hunt and really happy with him getting his first Nilgai. It’s a cool place.

Time to transition to Teniente. I had a pretty solid scouting day yesterday. I jumped a pretty good buck and then found a fresh poop pile not far from it and there was a mesquite tree less than 30 yards from it to hang my saddle setup.

Not far from that spot, I jumped a couple nilgai and then a buck bedded with a doe so seems to be some game in the area.

Did a quick scouting trip today and found a few backup spots. Didn’t see any animals today but I was probably only in there for an hour and a half and it was mid day.

Pretty slow day today and it sounds like that was the case for most of the guys I talked to this evening. I had a doe roll through early this morning and got a cool video of a coyote. Relocated midday and this afternoon didn’t see anything.

Another pretty slow morning for me. Saw one doe late and made a move to a new spot with a couple trails converging into one.

Few of the guys have seen some good deer just hoping one decides to walk down the trail I am on this afternoon.
