What's y'alls opinion on having to purchase the APH before applying? I can see how it's no big deal if you're going to hunt some other stuff that requires the APH without a draw. But I think they should give you the option to purchase it if you get drawn so you don't waste the money if you get skunked? Just thought about it tonight. Wanted to put me and a son in for some E-Postcard hunts but that's $96 bucks in additional fees. Thanks for the input.

Yeah I like your idea of buying the APH *after* you draw an e-postcard hunt. Same boat with us, three kids and wife I have to buy 5 APH's. Of course kids are grown now so it's on them, but two of them didn't buy because they can't afford it. I don't think that's the intent t by TPWD though, they're trying to squeeze blood from a turnip.

It’s been discussed more in depth in the past but I can’t recall which thread it was in.
I could see how it would stink a little if you have a kid you want to put on the card.
way I justified it was applying for enough of the hunts that it took the 48 and turned it into “16 3$ entries” that if I drew any of them, don’t cost me $80 or $130 in a permit.
There’s a few hunts that in my head are worth paying $48 just for a shot to go. Especially if I don’t have a permit fee on the back end.

I used to put in for several of these til they started making you buy the APH, then I quit because those hunts just weren't worth it to me. That let's those who really want those hunts, and are willing to buy the APH, have better odds at drawing them.

I don't mind that you have to buy the APH before applying. I like that the E-postcard hunts are different as far as how they do things, points, etc. Makes the odds of drawing better imo and if you get drawn for something every couple of years then the no permit fee means you come out ahead in the long run vs paying app fees and $130 permit fees.
On the flip side, it probably makes getting picked for a standby spot much harder. If only people who drew hunts purchased the APH then I doubt there'd be many people show up for standby. Since I already bought my APH I'm much more likely to head over and see if I get lucky with a standby spot.

This isn't going to be a popular opinion but I think it is worth saying. No other states are this hard to hunt public. To me the state of Texas has made a business from all of this lottery nonsense.
If it is owned by the state/govt then it is owned by the people. This is the hardest State I've ever came across but has this strongest heritage of hunting. I don't see how most people can afford private to share that legacy. While the "kingdom" does allow folks to do a lottery that is us eating table scraps. With the recent move to outlaw streambeds our culture is at risk of becoming another rich mans sport.
Is there an advocacy group in Texas that is for Texas hunters in regards to this? Am I crazy in thinking we should have the same rights as the rest of the nation?
