in my opinion, too many limbs for a climbing stand. I am using a hang on with climbing sticks/ladder. I hunted from a ground blind but got busted too many times last year. I'll post if I have better luck this year.

Are there possibly any stands already set up that I could use?

This thread has really caught my attention. I am hunting the public land at Aquilla but I have a lot of family in the San Angelo area. So, I am very interested in SASP. I will be checking out the maps/info on the web.
Thanks for all the info fellas.

The park has rifle blinds on the ground in some areas. No tripods or tree stands. You have to carry it in and carry it out.

Don't know if SBM is on here today but, to answer your question, there are no daily fees and there is no assignment. You just have to register at the south gate with your APH and vehicle lisense number. They will give you a map and a page of rules. I have a treestand up and a camera out but I check on it daily. Tomorrow will be pretty crowded I am guessing. Last year I was in a ground blind well before sunup on the first day and there were a few hunters trudging around all morning but not bad.
                  Hope this helps.

went out twice this weekend and did not see a thing. had a spike and a fork horn and a bunch of does on the trailcam all in the early morning hours. Also a couple of BIG hogs.

Not to rant guys but it is public land and there are other people hunting out here. Tromping around the entire pasture at 5pm in a blaze orange vest doesn't help anyone.

                        Hey Todd,

A friend and I will be coming out there next weekend. Where would you suggest we go? I was thinking about hunting up around the river. I've never been out there and want to just get away for a weenend. We'll be leaving Ft. Bliss friday afternoon and hopefully get to San Angelo before midnight and hunt first thing on Saturday morning. We'll both have ground blinds for that morning but I'll bring a hang on stand if I can find a place good enough to hand it.

                        Thanks,
                        Russ

I have only hunted in area 7 close to the river and have a tree stand there. Area 6 has a lot of river frontage and would probably be good for a treestand. Not sure about any other areas.Make sure that you register at the south gate before hunting; if you are coming in that late, you may want to call Pat bales at the park HQ and try to work something out so you can hunt early Sat morning. There is no one at the gate to 7 am usually.
                          Good Luck!!

Hunting area 1 this weekend. We saw a few does and I jumped 1 turkey. I wish it wasn't so freaking far away or I'd be there every weekend!! Might see if I can slip out there again. May have to look up the TBR area also.

When would you say the rut occurs in SASP?
