Just be forewarned that it's deceptively heavy for it's size. It's 4.5 lbs in a lens that's just 13 or 14" long when it's collapsed. I got used to my 2.5 lb. 200-500 and wielding this beast is taking some getting used to.
No, it's not a 500 f4, but still. I'm sure the VC is helping a lot at 600. That's the other part - hand-holding at 600mm takes some steady hands. Esp. when you're on a crop body like I am, and you're really hand-holding the equivalent of 960mm! Yikes!

Kill Zone, I know probably 50 people who tell me "I wish I had a camera like that!" LOL. To which I always respond - this isn't the last one they made you know. ha, ha.
A really good lens for outdoor photography that won't break the bank is the 50-250 IS STM Canon lens. It's made for crop body cameras like my 50D, and it can be found for under $175 most places. It's really really sharp. They call it the "nifty two-fifty" for a reason. With the crop body, it's the equivalent of a 400mm lens on 35mm.
Combine that with a clean used 20D or 40D and for about $500 your daughter can have a killer combo she will really enjoy.
The other comment I love when people see the photos I take is "Wow, you must have a really good camera!" LOL. I love that one. I usually say "yea, and I hear Hemingway had a great typewriter too!"
