I’m guessing if you didn’t harvest sunflowers and just mowed over them or left them. They would reseed there self. Something almost like a wild sunflower.

Maximillian sunflowers are another native that bloom later so would keep the dove around but are much more expensive and harder to establish.

Three years ago, We had our place for about 15 years. We have an eight acre field that I have planted off and on over the years , although I have never planted sunflowers. Three years ago I disked the field to prep it for planting but before I could get anything planted, sunflowers started popping up all over the field. Apparently someone before me had planted sunflowers and the seeds stayed dormant all those years.
