There could be a lot of factors like late fawn, offspring from a fawn, and food. But if I see a 2 1/2 year old spike or up to a small dink 8 it's Tamales time !!! He was 6 1/2 years old in pic

I agree. Let em walk until 2. We have a buck who last year as a yearling he had backward forks, that looked like a dink backwards axis. This year as a 2 year old he has 13 points on a main frame 5x5. You have no clue what happens until they are 2.5

Exact reason we let ours walk too. I have never seen a spike over 1.5 in person. I've seen a few shot by others.

I would even go further and say you have no clue until they are mature.

A 2yo is not a spike, he is a young buck. At 3 bye bye

And before you start selectively start removing bucks from a deer herd in an effort to improve the deer herd, there are numerous other things that need to be done first. 95%, never even remotely come close to achieving the other things.

Go look up the studies done on different pastures of the King Ranch. Showed culling was very ineffective in changing anything as it related to antler size.

            HF is another story.

I would never shoot a spike...with an ear tag!
