This is the response Mike sent me on this issue...

The 8x42 will gather more light and will be easier to hold steady. Lower power with the same front objective lens will gather more light. Lower power binos have less perceived movement. If you want even more light gathering go with the 8.5x50. They are $***.00 and a great overlooked choice. They will be slightly larger and heavier than the 42 mm.
