Best idea for a youth bow.

I am trying to get into archery, haven't shot a bow in 20 years or so. Got a nice browning of Craigslist from a good guy here local, not sure if he's on TBH or not, Jonas.

What is the best way to get my 7 year old into it as well, he loves all of the hunting shows and wants to do it. I also got a Pearson youth bow, but way to heavy of a weight. I'll test his weight ability this weekend. Don't want to get
him a cheapy recurve set, might frustrate him, at same time, don't want to sink a ton in a first bow, if he doesn't really get into it. Are the $30-40 Barnett Banshee (compounds) worth it for a first timer?

    Thanks for any advice

I just picked up a Mathews Genesis a couple of days ago for my youngest daughters 8th birthday. The draw is a little heavy for her but she can shoot it. After about 8 - 10 shots she gets tired but I suspect she will be past that in about a week or so. Once she learns proper form it should be easier for her to draw and shoot.

Thank y'all for the advice, I'll start looking around once I figure out his max draw strength. (Guess I need to pony up my $10 to be a supporter huh?)

Mission craze or mission line hands down for the budget. Beginner /youth etc ... It's adjustable , the isnt all there, but if that is the issue step up from craze to the maniac or minnac . Best bows for price , quality/warranty/ money / everything for beginner unless you got $$$$ go big and get a z7 extreme or a smooth one ( ez7) good luck my brother !

The biggest problem with young ones is the mass weight of the bow, usually they can handle the draw weight but the overall weight wears them down.. I started my grandkids out with a mini-Genesis and it was much more comfortable for them and I think they enjoyed it more.. The oldest has now outgrown it and tomorrow we're headed to Bob Sarrels place to get her fitted for a Longbow..

Javi , that's why I think the mission craze would be perfect!

The craze can go from like 17 pounds to 70 that's versatile there .

Thanks, I guess I got a lot of research to do. I know that several options are listed, what would the typical price for an entry bow be? If he didn't like it as much as he thinks, would it be easy to get a decent % of the money back out of it?

Although I haven't been on the site long at all, I love the info and ideas. Y'all seem like a great group of guys, willing to help others and share info.

You can pick up some very nice, very little used bows in the the $200 to $300 range. Start looking and dont get in a hurry. Check out the classifieds on archerytalk as well.

I picked up the Genesis from a fellow TBHer for $125. I started looking about 2 months ago and there have been a few listed but I always found the add just a little too late.

The Nuclear Ice and the Craze were on my shopping list as well, both really nice. I just found the deal on the Genesis first.

The most important thing, he's spending time with dad doing something cool. I don't matter what he's shooting. It's all about the time out there together.

I went with the Mission Menace over the Craze for my 10y/o daughter for just that reason. The Menace is just a tad lighter and still has tons of adjustability (D/L and pull).

This 200-300 is hard for me to get around. If you saw my post on the DIY thread for the shed to beat HOA, I am pretty frugal. Guess if I am going to try to start him, I should do it right, or it would be a bad experience.

Heck, only paid $25 for my Browning, the Pearson, a bunch of carbon arrows, and a sight. Guess I got a cheap enough start to make up for him.

I am seeing the consensus to stay away from the Academy starter set thouh, huh?

Guys, thanks for all the info. Looks like I'll be putting this off for a while, he's going to really need to earn it.

I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions as I try to pick this up again. Just been playing w/ the bow since Saturday and I am having a ball.
