Shoot yeah! Your buddy could sell them on eBay or give them to me. :-)
They respond to heat treating just like 1095, which is a good knife steel.

      These look good Sam.

A lot of that depends on who made the rasp. Some are just surface hardened and don't take well to heat treat. In other words they have a layer of good steel about .030 thick on the outer layer of the rasp but the interior is just low carbon steel that really won't harden enough to make a good knife.

Mike, I know that's true of a lot of files, but I've tried Heller Legend, Bellota, Save Edge, and Simmonds farrier rasps, and they have all hardened for me. A guy on Blade Forums said he called Heller, Simmonds, and Save Edge and was "told by all 3 that they basically use 1095."

I've been heat treating them like 1095 with good results.

Very true but if you ever come across one with no makers ID on it be sure to check it before you waste your time turning it into a blade. Been there and done that. Lesson learned on my part.

I am the proud owner of the sharpfinger and I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out! The pictures don't do the knife justice, thanks again Sam!
