    cutting drilling pipe

What is the best thing to cut a piece of drill stim pipe (I think 2 3/4 inch in diameter and 1/2 " thick maybe) with if you do not have access to a torch or plasma. I was going to use it for a tripod but they are 20 in length. Please list the brand that you think is best as well. Also how many pieces of pipe can you cut with each cutting wheel or saw. thanks for your help

If you don't have a torch than either a chop saw or a band saw. You can make several cuts before you have to replace the blades.

Use a saws-all with metal blade!

chop saw like a dwalt 10" miter saw that you would cut 2x4's with, with a metal blade ( http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...3+90016+502400 ). Also a saw zaw with a fine tooth metal blade. Are these what you all are talking about. Can you use a grinder with a metal cutting blade (if they make them)

just use an angle grinder with the metal blade. when in the shop i find hundreds of things that need to be cut but are to big for my tube cutter

I have a rigid brand chop saw that I picked up for 50 bucks and it will cut all you want. A miter will work for a short period but if you use it for metal alot it will burn the motor up. A saws-all will work but you may need dental work after you use it, and there is always the hack saw if you want a work out.

A chop saw is my go-to tool in the garage. I sharpen axes with it, clean up screwdriver blade tips, cut metal, grind, cut ceramic tile for bathroom repairs, have cut wood in a pinch when I didn't have a real saw at the duck club and have a flap-type grind wheel for sanding. Well worth the price, I have a 4' Makita but any will do for home projects.

                Torch is easiest.

Becareful using a metal saw cutting something like drill stem/pipe....I have seen many of those thin cutting wheels come apart....you really need to use a grinding wheel instead of the metal saw for something like that....

                    grinding wheel

If an angle grinder will do, I would rather go this route, especially if it makes good cuts. Would you go with the 4" or 5" or 7", also 9 amps or 6 amps. I gather that higher amps decrease the chance to burn it up. thanks for all your help.

well i guess i can add my two cents since we have cut, welded and shipped offshore more pipe than i can probably remember,

You need to make sure you got the correct blades on a band saw, if it is drill pipe it is probably 4140 material or simular and therefore hard. It will eat your saw blades, if you use a saws all , well good luck , it can be done but you will be more aggrevated than productive.
Your torch for your use is the best way, go down to the local welders supply and rent some bottles and come home and cut it down.
The 75 to 100 bux you spend will be well worth your time saved and the aggrevation that you wont have to deal with.

use the biggest you can get your paws on, also look for a .045 or 1/16" thick wheel for the hand held grinder, it will cut better than anything else. Just do not, and i say again DO NOT side load the wheel. The only pressure you can put on that wheel is straight onto the metal. And wear a full faceshield!!!! An also, the higher the amps, the more power you have in the grinder. good luck

For a clean safe and easy cut, see if you can rent a porta-band, safe and easy, and not very expensive.
