    Have you looked into using a adz? Not sure of the spelling. It's a type of axe..

    I was looking on woodcarving illustrated. Some guy suggested a hole saw. Then use a chisel to break the piece off.

    That made me think of maybe trying to find a core sample bit......
    I have looked into an adz. If I was splitting the log open to remove material, it would be perfect. However, my goal is to keep the log intact, so it's not much use.

        Got hold of another stump yesterday. Thinking this one will be my ashtray, or a gift table. The wood is very dense (oak? not sure) and it weighed 93 pounds at the start.

        Trying a combination of mud on the parts I don't want burned and using my leaf blower to accelerate the fire at times.

          Using a fan speeds up the process probably ten-fold. You really have to babysit it though.
