500 Gallon Propane Tank Smoker Build!!!

Not sure why I think I need such a monstrosity, but why not???

Actually it's not a full 500 gallon tank anymore as one end cap has been used for other purposes as well as a foot or more off the same end.

Special thanks to Hogman for the hookup on the tank!!!

This will be a smoker on wheel of the reverse flow type...similar to this.

Not to hi-jack but if you were gonna build one out of a propane tank how would you go about making the initial cut without getting killed in the process lol

Only safe way I know is to fill it with water, then cut. But i'm sure there are other ways.

Oh that's a great question. I inherited this tank as is....open ended and been cut on. So I just went to town!!!

From what I've seen on the internet, most guys fill with water and drain several times and then hook up a hose from the exhaust of their truck to the tank...that evacuates the oxygen I assume.

              No oxygen...no boom. Maybe.

Are you going to build a insulated firebox for it?

No need to amigo. 3/8" wall will keep the heat great. Good looking intro skinny guy. Add a removable disc cooker burner for munchies.

Looking great HD. Looking forward to the finished project. My dad and I built a reverse flow. I need to reiterate, he built a reverse flow and I helped with a little bit of it . The finished product is great! Heavier obviously, but great! However, welding that plate in was about the most monotonous pain in the arse thing I have ever done. His is 36" x 8'. Welding each 7.5' side, while cramped in a piece of 36" pipe, was about as fun as sticking my finger in a meat grinder . Have fun with it though! It will be a cooking machine!

I'm sure you have already planned for this, but we put a grease channel on his horizontal plate. Basically, it was just a piece of 2" angle iron in the middle with each side sloping in about 10 degrees or so. It slightly sloped down toward the front where we welded a valve on the bottom of the pit. If that makes sense. I think I have some pictures saved somewhere if you ever need them.

I'm looking forward to seeing the food **** pics when it's finished!

I'd love to see some pics!!!

Yeah our baffle plate is 35" by 61" out of 3/8" steel. It's a beast...gunna have to use the hay spikes to put it in I'd imagine...and a sledge hammer to get it exactly where we want it.

Hey PB...I am planning on putting a spot on the from of the rig for a propane tank, burner, etc for the disc cooker for sure!!!

Been texting back and forth with my Dad about trailer ideas...I'd like to build my own custom trailer honestly. I'm pretty sure I can get everything I need to get it rolling from Tractor supply or my local trailer sales/repair shop.

I'm planning on cutting some plate and filling the holes I cut in the tank later today.

                              Thanks for following y'all.
