Avian flu. Once it is detected, the farmers have to kill the entire flock of chickens, (or turkeys). So far 44 million chickens had to be destroyed. Chicken & turkey prices will be going up soon, too.

I thought $16 for scratch 2x a month was bad. Sounds like I’m getting $10 worth of eggs a day

Right, so the egg shortage is a government-imposed self-inflicted wound in response to a virus.

          Feed- doubled
          Trucking- doubled
          Housing- quadrupled

I bet if a person started from zero and bout enough chickens for the family they still would be cheaper to buy eggs for years

Was also told to prepare for the possibility of zero eggs available in the next 9 months or so!

Pure stupidity. We just bought 40 full grown hens for 6 bucks a pop....2 days later had 7 eggs. Next day 10.

A lot of people who have backyard flocks are also reporting lower egg production than normal. It appears as though some feed manufacturers have changed ingredients due to supply chain shortages, and this particular feed will decrease egg laying rates.

Now take a look at all of the foods out there that have eggs in them. All of those prices are going to keep going up as egg prices keep going up. Real world inflation is MUCH higher than what the “official” number is.

At those numbers I’ll put lights on my birds and make them lay! C’mon by the house and we’ll make a deal that benefits everyone!

Interesting. Our production went to almost zero a couple of months ago (we also had a traumatic event with a raccoon killing a couple of chickens in front of the others, and then added 3 new ones to the flock.) Ours are mostly free range, so I’m not sure what effect the feed had on production. My wife added a light on a timer to extend “daytime” and the last couple of weeks our production has increased substantially.
