It's my understanding that he was indeed going to see the Sheriff. Question is, why didn't State and Federal law enforcement not want him to get there? Isn't the Sheriff different than all other law enforcement, due to the fact that they are an elected official? No one has answered this yet.

It depends on the laws of that state but I don't know of any special powers of a sheriff except in TX only he can run a county jail and take bond for anything above a Class B misdemeanor. A sheriff can't show up at an accident scene and order a trooper or city officer to not arrest someone.

I don't think it's true that they didn't want them to get there specifically... They saw an opportunity to arrest these people and took it imo.
