If we can just turn off tiktok, could we not just turn off the sites linked to child **** and trafficking? Also, I worry much more about China owning 400,000 acres in the US than about a tiktok. This whole tiktok banning business seems like its a distraction for something

I thought the whole scotus decision was about 'IF' the govt had the right to ban...not that they now had to & Trump is going against them??

I wish the govt would address the purchasing of US land, high altitude balloons & yes, now transformers they can hack...that seems to be a much bigger security threat concern than spying on some teeny bopper SM / phone??

Again, where are the victims who use tiktok that China violated?? How has/will China use tiktok & in regards to national security w/ the app??

Martinis always have relevance with Shawn's posts :-)

What makes you say that? Facebook doesn’t own TT and I haven’t seen anything to indicate they plan to purchase it.

Edit: Guessing you meant to get it shut down to begin with and not the restoration

I dont know this for certain but Id imagine tiktok is top 2 or 3 competitor of facebook. I dont have either but I saw Mark Wayne Mullins and many other politicians buy meta stock a day or 2 before the tiktok ban began.

There is a big difference between the China version and the U.S. version.
Go and see if the China version allows the B.S. that is on the U.S. version. China only allows educational post on the website; none of this horse s#!t we see on the U.S. version.
The Chicoms are literally killing our country from within!

Well It's really all about the tards...the teenage tards cell info will eventually help the ccp dominate the world.

The swamp is just pizzed they don't have control of another major sm player....I watched more vids of what actually happened in gaza / israel from nobodies sharing / using tt than I ever did from ABC.

Seems like something the right would be more strict on than the left yet he’s making it a day one issue. Also not a big fan that he’s going against the SC’s decision, what’s the point of the Supreme Court if you’re just going to override them?
He is not going against the Supreme Court and he is not overriding them.Trump is also not going against Congress, which would be unconstitutional in the separation of powers. Trump can’t enact laws.

The Supreme Court doesn’t write statutory law and they didn’t write this law. They answer questions about the Constitution with their separation of powers and authority in Article III.

The problem with this situation seems to be that it is a highly politically charged situation and seemingly nobody (or very few) people discussing it has any clue about any of the laws in play. They just have opinion on free speech or a foreign adversary…. or moronic young people.

Trump issued an executive order four years ago basically forcing TikTok into negotiations to give the US some control over the platform. This was not something Trump came up with but an actual federal law giving the president such authority for emergency situations.

After Trump left office, Congress passed another law basically banning TikTok…. UNLESS, the president through negotiations with them, allowed that partnership control or divestiture.

There was never a law than banned TikTok on a specific date, like, on this date TikTok ends!!!

There was a law that said 270 days after it was enacted (ending January 19, 2025) TikTok would be banned…. UNLESS the president was able to negotiate with them to work out a solution. (while TikTok precipitated this law, it is not TikTok specific)

So Congress did not ban TikTok. The law allowed the president time off to act. Biden did not. Trump with negotiations with TikTok is giving them time to negotiate a deal with private companies for 50% US control over the platform.

The Supreme Court involvement was because TikTok sued the US Attorney General saying that the federal law violated the First Amendment and freedom of speech.

The Supreme Court in their unsigned (per curiam) decision said that normally this would be a free speech type issue however there is a specific federal law for national security purposes, which is within their authority, to ban foreign adversaries (in this case China) from having complete control IF (remember that the Supreme Court doesn’t write statutory laws) that is what Congress passes. The US Congress did enact such legislation. The main question before the Supreme Court was, does the US Congress have such authority to ban foreign government intrusions for national security and if that authority tramples on the First Amendment.

The Supreme Court decision was based on a constitutional question which is their authority in Article III. Again, was it within the authority of Congress to ban free speech from an adversary of the United States for security purpose to protect the United States?

Their ruling was yes, Congress has that authority. The Supreme Court did not rule that China, TikTok or anything else was a threat. That is with the authority of Congress, not the Supreme Court

Going back to the law, remember that Congress passed a law giving the president specific authority to negotiate with a foreign adversary for the divestiture of control to protect the United States. Trump is neither overriding federal law which specifically gave the president that authority and he is not overriding the Supreme Court, who simply said, the law allowing the president the authority for national security against a foreign adversary is constitutional. In doing so they said this is not a First Amendment situation against American citizens and in the decision the Supreme Court absolutely stated that this has nothing to do with American citizens who do have the right of free speech. This has to do with an outside potential enemy of this country and free speech does not enter into the equation and Congress passing a law giving the president authority to negotiate.

                        Clear as mud???
