Well we arrived in Sonora tx around 330 friday morning and decided to unload everything and go sit on the stands to check out what was moving and put the smack down on some hogs or a good axis... we about 730 this ole boy came walkin down the river bed with another younger buck. he turned broad side at 40 yards and started headin away so i waited for him to stop and let the arrow fly , well he took a step and it hit a little far back. well i did not know this at the time and when i saw him go lay down about 60 yards from where i shot him i thougth he was done ... i got down and eased his way well when i got about 20 yards from him i figured out pretty fast he wasnt done yet and he haulled brownie. i backed out after that and waited about a hour and started followin the trail and a hour wasn not long enough because i jumped him again and thats when i saw where i hit him and was devistated .. this would be my first axis and i did not wanna loose him. i got out of there asap and went to camp to get my FIL and BIL and we took our time gettin back down there just to give him time to expire ... well we gave him time and got on the trail we followed it for more than 2 miles and it started gettin smaller and eventually it ran out and we lost the trail... after looking for 3 hours we headed back to camp and i was sick that we didnt find him when i was sure that we would with all the blood starting out .. well we hunted the that evening and the next day and we saw a lot of animals and it was very relaxing but i was still upset about loosing that deer so sundaty morning i took out towards where we lost the blood trail and not even a hundred yards from where we stopped was a tree full of buzzards and i knew that he was there,,, i ventured up there and there he lay the buzzards kinda got to him and needless to say i learned my lesson about giving a wounded animal time , even though i found him all the meat was ruined and if i would not have pushed him he would have died in sight of my stand.. Hard lesson learned and a lot of meat wasted. I got the head to do a Euro mount and he measured 36 '' on the left side and 35 1/2 on the right and from tip to tip was 27 1/2 inches wide and 33 inches wide at the widest point.. his brows were 10 and 11 iches and he broke off the 2 towards the top... If your not sure of the shot give it some time ...

congrats on the axis sorry about the shot. One of my friends shot a ram a few years ago. He took pictures with the sucker and everything. we went back to get him and he was gone. We found him three days later. He had gone almost 200 yards from where the photo session took place. He was hit with a rifle but he wasn't dead.
thanks for the reminder about waiting a animal out!
