    Dumb Buck w/LDP

Well, went back to Wimberley area to bowhunt some more--got a doe last trip up. Sat a different stand-on the very top of one of the high ridges to the NE of town. Saw a scrape that was not there a week ago as I walked in, so was encouraged, but got to the feeder and it was nearly empty. Shook enough corn onto the spinner plate to get the "dinner bell" sound, got in the stand, and settled in--about 4:05. Wind was from my 10:00 (feeder at 12:00) and was light and twitchy. About 45 minutes later, heard a sound over my right shoulder coming from an open area where the cedar has been cleared. Picked up a deer coming in--small doe, and a larger deer behind her--with antlers. They came in from down wind of me but neither appeared to smell me. The doe came right in and started chowing down. Buck lingered off about 60-70 yds away, and one time, it looked like he was going over the hill towards my buddy in the other stand, but turned back and kept watching the doe. Finally started to work his way along the edge of the ridge from 3:00 to about 1:00 about 50 yds out, and then started directly towards me. Got about 25 yds out and stopped behind a couple of oaks. At this time, I got the dreaded "I can't breathe, feet be still, heart quit pounding" symptoms . He then turned to his right and walked out into the open. I drew when he turned and when he stepped out at 18 yds, I popped him. He turned and ran to the edge of the ridgeline, and over the ridge. I always wait at least 30 minutes before I get down to check things out, and I could see my arrow in the ground beyond where he was standing when I took the shot. My formerly white fletching was pink. When I did get down, no blood trail for about 10 yds but I knew the trail he took and just walked along--blood began, and by the time I got to the ridgeline, it was a good trail. Over the ridge, down the hill along a trail for about 35 yds, then the blood trail cut to the right, downhill. Looked down a bit, and he was piled up next to a bunch of cut cedar. It was a terrible shot--waaaayyy too far back, but I cut a major blood vessel, as he only went about 80 yds total. Dragged him back up to the edge of the ridge just out of sight of the stand, and got back into the stand. About 20 minutes later I was covered up with deer--3 nubbin bucks and 2 does, with another larger-bodied deer standing about 60 yds away in the cedars. Then another buck came in--a young 6 pt that was trying to be a 7 or an 8--he charged the deer in front of me, scattering them all over the place, then put his nose down and started sniffing--does wouldn't have a thing to do with him, but I surely enjoyed his antics.

Congrat on the Buck. With an LDP shot must not have been that terrible
