Is it to early to plant rye grass?

We have rain in the forecast for the next three days and was thinking about planting a few food plots. I have a mixture of brassica's,clover, and rye seed. Do you think its to early? I would appreciate any advice.

We normally plant rye until October after the army worms weren't so much in the ground....maybe they have changed the rye over the years...

Yes. Mid September thru November. It is a good time to work you plots up and have them ready to seed later though.

It would be ok to plow up and put out round up. But wait to plant.

It looks like you may be hunting in the northern and eastern parts of the state. You can probably plant a couple of weeks earlier than those in central and southern Texas. I still don't think I would put seed out until mid October unless it gets really cool earlier than normal. You might get it up with an early rain, but with temperatures running what they have been, there's a good chance it burns up before Fall. Rye grass, wheat and oats are "cool season annuals"and should be treated that way. Prepare your ground, let it rain on it and plant it when the nights start cooling off.

I agree that it will burn up and die if you plant before October. We plant a bunch every year and I always wait till the temperature drops, usually mid-October.

Incidentally if someone knows a good place to get cheap rye grass in North Texas please PM me. Thanks.

Thanks for the help. Is there anything you can plant now? I would like to have some green plots for October.

Nothing you plant now will do any good. We started planting wheat around labor day. If you do that (and get some rain), it should be up by early season.

Get it in the ground by September 15, if we get any rain it will be green by October.

                              What to plant?

I'm fairly new to TX hunting, but not to food plots. Since yall are all (or mostly) native Texans I was hoping yall could give me some advice to what seed or seed blends work well in these sandy soils. I hunt Parker County and am looking to plant a couple of harvest plots about 1/4 acre or so. What will grow in this soil? Thanks- Matt
