We have had luck planting iron clay or cow peas in August for a pre-season snack We just plant them in plot that wont contain any winter/spring seeds. They usually last until the first hard freeze or two which could as late as December for us.

Do deer eat rye grass? I didnt think they ate it. Maybe they just dont prefer it around my places.

I know from experience that cows love rye grass. Deer will eat it when it first comes up. In the past I've had pretty good luck with peas in east Texas if you can keep the rabbits out of them.
