What does a .45 sound like when fired in your neighbors house?

    I know.

Last night I could not sleep, nor could my wife. At 2:30am, a muffled Bam..Bam...........Bam. She had no clue what it was as it sounded like someone hitting a trash can lid somewhere outside. And I was laying on my good ear, so it sounded like a cat jumping or running in the house. 45 min later, the chocolate lab wants outside, and because I sprayed weed killer on the weeds and didn't want the 65lbs garbage disposal eating it, I went out on the deck to watch her.

That is when I saw flashlights from the inside of my neighbor's house looking out their back sliding glass door. Weird...but my neighbors are not your normal neighbors, so I just knocked it up as weird. But my dog wouldn't come in, and she kept smelling the corner of the fence. Then she LIT UP! Someone was out front between the houses. Again, I wasn't surprised...the 30 somethings next door live a later lifestyle than we do. I grabbed her and drug her back inside.

One look out my bathroom window between the houses revealed 5 squad cars!!! And the K9 unit was just getting out of the car. Around the back of the neighbors house they went and right to the corner of my fence where my dog was hanging out. The moment they opened my gate and went in the back yard, I grabbed my pants and shirt...now I was involved.

Here a "friend of a friend" had broken into the neighbor's house and who know what was on their mind...but when they approached the bedroom door, my neighbor fired one shot into the top of the door frame, and the next through the side of the door frame that hit the intruder. Then down the hall, and one more shot at the front door as the intruder ran out. 1 for 3 hits.

No blood, but apparently he came from my back yard in through their back sliding door which had the security bar mysteriously removed and missing. They are checking every hospital in the Kansas City area for someone with a .45 slug in their side/butt/leg.

Been in the house for only 3 weeks, and now I got to meet my neighbor. Poor kid (38ish) was shaken!!!! And MAN....a .45 slug going though wood molding makes some serious splinters!!!

Pray that my wife can feel safe when I have to travel for work, but most of all pray for my neighbor who now feels the fear of retaliation from people.

Be careful man. Take your wife to the pistol range this weekend and get her schooled on the functions of a pistol so that while your traveling she can handle things just incase they mistake your house for your neighbors.

Well, my beautiful wife who is petrified of firearms after a very bad incident when she was 12yo, understood that I needed a place for my rifle and shotgun. She asked me to look into a rental storage place, or a safe. Safe was not in our budget, so they found their way into the attic which is only accessible through a small square panel in our master closet. It was a HUGE step for her to agree to having them here. I think she realized that I kept my rifle in the garage since last deer season, but never said anything. Or she was oblivious. Either way, a .308 is not a self defense weapon.

While laying in bed talking through things last night she sounded intrigued that my brother and his wife (both teachers in the Houston suburbs) are CHL and carry. She was shocked to find out that "uncle Mike" (who is 10 years my younger) had a .45 (even though he shot competitively in college). But asked a few more questions when she found out that his small little wife also carried. She brushed it off...and I didn't push the issue....but I knew she was thinking......and will continue for a while. She will approach the topic...it is a NO GO topic for me.

I travel realtively soon, so we will have to see how things progress between now and then. I am all about getting her exposed, educated, and professionally trained. It would help with her fear of the unknown.

Shotguns work better than .45's for taking out the bad guys...that is why my wife has one that will hold 5 rounds and knows how to use it.

I agree with the shotgun approach. Take her out somewhere and get her comfortable with it. Then find a good place to keep it, in case of emergency, away from kids (and prying eyes) if you have them. That's some scary shiite.
