That way you know they’re not pregnant.

      Sucks for the nursing fawn.

No, it "unsucks" the nursing fawn.

Now I feel better that the decision is hard and no perfect answer. Had young buck come out with one doe together. Felt like she was going to get bred but they left before I could flip a coin. Thinking fast is getting harder as I get older.

We try and shoot the pregnant ones. That’s at least a two-fer sometimes a triple. Our numbers are crazy out of whack and we can’t catch up

Axis does breed 10 days after giving birth and breed twice a year, so they are always going to be pregnant. If you want to increase your numbers, pass the does and shoot a spike. They are larger than does and taste equally well.

When we were over run in Bandera with them….we would shoot the doe, her yearling and the year old buck with them. Then come back that night with a spotlight.

We would shoot them all! Whatever it took.

Id shoot does for meat if you have a good heard. Like others have said if it wasnt pregnant id be surprised, its just part of it.

I have a spot where I hunt Axis free range and the land owner, as myself and others agree that. Shoot the young bucks and leave the baby makers alone. Every Axis buck we have ever gutted spit out a unborn fawn or two. Now some folks are heavily trapping Axis and their numbers have gotten lower. Maybe we need to rethink the management plan and just shoot whatever comes along since axis have been scarce.

Sounds like shooting whatever comes along might make them more scarce

Not a fan of axis trapping. Axis have become a great year around opportunity for lots of Texas hunters.
