    Axis doe vs axis buck?

How many people feel better about shooting a young axis buck for meat rather than a doe? It seems like everytime someone shoots a doe she is pregnant. I know sometimes it's obvious she is pregnant but lots of people can't tell. I just hate thinking that losing two at one time.

I shot a pregnant one. She was the biggest of all the does in the herd.

If I had to do it again, I'd pick not the fattest one and hope for the best.

honestly, I would try to find a cull axis buck to whack. some people don't care, but the axis does will almost always be pregnant.

Definitely depends on your management plan and population

        Sure they are pregnant
But our whitetail does are usually
        Pregnant when we kill them
        Just not as far along

Young bucks already have an investment of time in them
        Unborns don’t.

          X2.

I've never killed or seen killed an axis doe that was not pregnant.

I get the opportunity so seldom I shoot the first one I can. If it’s a doe, so be it. I’ve never been an antler hunter only.

Just like whitetail does. Either pregnant or going to be.

We are still trying to increase our herd numbers so I would much rather shoot a buck than a doe. My thought is 1 buck can impregnate several does but only does can have the babys. That 1 buck is only one going to be 1 buck. But 1 does will equal several in only a couple years.

But if you shoot the one buck who’s going to do the work with the doe? I think one buck will benefit the herd more than losing one doe

I’ve killed or butchered hundreds of axis does and never seen one that wasn’t pregnant. Now, I don’t do a fetus check on every dang one but for the most part they be hoes! 😎

It doesn’t matter. Unless you’re never gonna shoot a doe. Once you kill a doe you kill every fawn it will ever have anyway.
                            They are almost always pregnant.

Shoot what you have an opportunity to kill.

I shoot the does that are nursing !
That way you know they’re not pregnant.
