I just paid some off duty firefighters $60 to test my sprinkler backflow preventer. City of temple requires it to be tested every 5 years.
Mine was bad, I didn’t have the time to deal with replacing it so I paid them to do that too. $360 later and it’s all squared away.
Someone with some spare time, pvc glue, and the license to inspect those things could make a profit. However, my dad in Tomball said he has NEVER had to have his inspected. So might be a city by city type thing.
I started my Roofing career as a side hustle. Worked Monday through Friday at my previous job and did roofing sales on the weekends. Within 2 month it turned into my full time job.
I worked for the phone company and started a welding/metal fabrication business when the company started talking about possible lay offs. It only took a year and I was working as many hours welding as I was doing phone work. I retired at 50 from the phone company and kept on with the metal work. It is the main reason I was able to live on this 223 acres with a nice house and shop.

Roofing sales? Would this be like bidding the job and sub contracting the work out?

Great story! Is my goal too. I have several things I can do but seems like everyone else is doing the same and I get discouraged about starting it.
I've been wanting to get into the septic business. I have a skid, mini ex and a dump truck and I lost my smell after covid so that's no longer an issue. I've helped replace a few tanks and generally enjoy the work. I have my pension with my PD and can leave at any point and that will give me some cushion if I choose to go this route.
