2019 Expedition...Ford says the cam phasers need to be replaced. It's out of warranty so $3400.00. Anyone use their own mechanic and what was the cost? some mechanics i've called don't want to even mess with it....My wife's already talked to Ford customer service once....this seems to be a known issue but they aren't budging on helping any right now.

Here is my advice… spend the $3,400 and get rid of it. Our 2019 has been in the shop now 4 times since august, 2 separate Ford shops have done work and we get 4-6 weeks before it begins all over again.
I’ve never opted for an extended warranty, but wife did on this and I am so glad she did or we would be looking at what our friends just had to do, which was drop a new motor in their 2019…

I have no idea if it was the same truck or even related, but maybe send him a PM and ask for details. Just sad it appears no one can make a quality vehicle anymore unless you get lucky.

Mine had the rattle for 140,000 miles. It passed away at 209,000 miles.
I think the price you've been quoted is fair. I've seen where some shops remove the cab to do the repair. It's a big job. Make sure they install the latest generation of those parts or it will come back.

It’s a known issue for any of the 3.5 ecoboost since 2012. Can’t go back in time but a little research and buying the ford extended warranty would’ve saved you some. Most will just rattle and not have any driveability issues. The rattle usually goes away after a little bit after startup. I had mine replaced under warranty as it was in for a different issues and they noticed it. It’s been that way for 40k miles and drove fine. The other problem is people mistake a rattle on start for the cam phasers when in turn it is the turbo waste gates rattling that is. Known issue as well hard to tell the difference. It’s kinda a crap shoot at this point if it’s just rattling but runs and drives fine then can keep driving it. A lot do the forums have a lot of rattling ones but not a lot of engine failures because of that but lost people I guess get it fixed before that happens. 3500 is pretty standard price and I wouldn’t let anyone but ford do it if it were me unless you know someone local that has done a lot of them. Key is my Ford place had everything in stock dropped truck off Tuesday was ready Thursday. It just sucks because the 3.5 is a beast otherwise

My 2015, on the other hand has been super dependable. I just replaced the left boosters and will probably need to do the right at some point, but it’s got 150k on it and I can accept that level of routine maintenance.
What’s frustrating thing is, this has blown up our process for never having 2 car payments at the same time

I put this on the government and their mandates for higher and higher fuel economy standards. The manufacturers have to try and find work around to fit the requirements. As soon as they have something somewhat figured out they change the rules again.
And no matter how you look at it, $3400 is a hell of a lot cheaper than a new vehicle.
