    dog bit by a copperhead

What do you all do when your dog gets bit by a copperhead snake on the jaw. Last night my dog and a copperhead got into a fight. Snake died by dog is swollen up. Took him to the vet. choices: $1000 for steroids, labs, antibiotics, iv fluids, watch for 2 days and moitor. $500 - iv fluids, labs, antibiotics send home and hope for the best. $2000 for antitoxin, steroids, labs, antibiotics, iv fluids, monitor for 3 days and moitor. Free - do nothing and see what happens. What is yalls suggestion?

I've had dogs bitten several times. Never did anything. All came out OK. Tough call, though.

We never did anything. They always got over it in a few days.
Dad's Coon dogs got bit several times, mostly moccasins.
Rattlers are the worst and will swell one real bad.
Never had one die from a snake bite----yet.

What size dog? How old? Is it a family pet, ranch dog, hunting dog?
If it were one of our dogs I'd listen very closely to the wife and go that direction.....at all costs.

We never did anything when our dogs would get bit. They just swelled up and in a week or two it was gone. They are all fine to this day.

My lab was bitten 3 times in the face ( once on the tongue )
gave him benadryl every 4-5 hours and made hime drink water,
( turned water bottle upside down in his mouth a couple of times )
He was fine the next day, except for the peice of his tongue that
fell off and never grew back, kinda funny looking but he is fine

Maybe an old wives tale but a rancher around here told me he has never lost a dog if it was bitten from the neck forward. He has lost a few bitten from the shoulder back. Tough choice. Disclaimer: Not responsible for dead dog.
