I mostly lake fished for 'em, but right now would be a good time to river fish for Ops in the backwaters when the rivers are at flood stage. They spawn up in the shallow water and they feed there too because the shallow water is warmer.

This one weighed 86# and was caught in 3 feet of water in late Feb.

Put a few lines out in a drainage by the house this week for giggles and grins. Didn't catch much but the kids had a blast. Biggest was a shade over 13, smallest is the fish he's holding, maybe 2-4lbs.

        Nice catching.

No real fishing for me this year. River is way too low. I may just relax and sit on the dock a few days this week.

We used to make them out of SCH40 PVC pipe. I like the idea of fiberglass rebar as well, but wonder about the ‘prickly pear’ effect after a use or two?

They definitely have the fiberglass prickly pear effect, I weather leather gloves when using them. I have 10 out of schedule 40 3/4" pvc and 15 out of the fiberglass rebar. I much prefer the rebar, much easier to stab in the bank when it's hard packed.

Not sure what he's using, but I think mine are 3/8". 1/2" pex slides over it pretty snug with a little bit of help from a heat gun. I put about 2" on the line end to keep them from splintering and use leather gloves when putting them out or picking them up. I'll take some pictures when I get home from the lake.

Thanks guys. I think these will work for me better than pvc as our dirt river banks are pretty tough soil.

What’s the trick to keep bait alive while running the river for a couple of days??
