    Square tubing fence

I’m wanting to build a fence around the backyard out of square tubing and stock panels with 4” x 4” openings. Was thinking 4” sq for the post and 2” sq for the top and bottom rail. Question is what wall thickness do y’all think 1/8” or 3/16” and how deep in the ground for the post? Concrete all them all in ? I’m reading that some are advising against concreting post in?

I've been mulling this over also. I have an entrance that I did with 4x4 post and 1 1/2 x 4 rails and the painting every 2 years is making me shy away from this.
What I did was dug a 8-10" hole 2' deep and filled with concrete and topped it with a base plate and welded my post to the base plate.

14ga should be plenty for posts and rails, unless you plan on spanning a whole 16FT panel between posts.

Imo a square tubing fence is a bad choice
We have a square tubing driveway entry and it hasn’t held up to the weather over the last few years, my mother had solid , flat and bar steel and it’s over a 100 years old and still rocking like new

I did my post with 2.5 or 3 best I remember and 2”top rail. No bottom rail on mine

You’re right 3 or 3.5 would look better.

I’d be interested in seeing a picture of her fence. I’m open for suggestions for sure. I have 2 big hounds over 100 lbs each and they are bending my t-post fence bad. I need a much heavier duty fence that looks nice. The area will be about 50ft x 100ft sq

On cure for a leaning or sagging fence is more(closer together) line posts.

I like my post same size as my top rail so I don't have to cap all the posts.

Could c-purling be used on top of the square tubing ( as a cap and rail) so as not to have to cap all the posts??

Could use receiver channel but I don’t think I would recommend it. Purlin would be a mess notching at each post.

If you use a quality DTM paint it (paint) should last a long time. As in at least a decade between painting.

Here is a link to a project I did with I-beam. There was no interest so I stopped posting. :-). Shows use of top rail same size as beam for clean cap (as mentioned above) https://discussions.texasbowhunter.c...to_threadtools

Square tubing will be at least twice as expensive a pipe. I would, and did, use 2 3/8" pipe posts and rails with bull panel on it. Most of that pipe is 3/16" and will out last square by a bunch.
