Ford Expedition THE GOOD, BAD and UGLY

Looking to buy something with more room for the wife and kids. Anybody own one and if so what has been your experience with them? 3.5 eco boost reliable? Mileage expectations?

Coolant leaks at turbo, water pump 65000 miles. Besides that all good, just a set of tires. 19-20 mpg on hiway.

Just bought one in December. So far, so good. Great comfortable ride. I haven't checked exact fuel economy. Doesn't matter though, because she loves it.

Wife has a 2021. Sunroof, a pillars and doors all rattle so bad on bumpy roads that I won't ride with her anymore. Sister in law has one that doesn't have these problems.

Have a 2020 model and we love it. XLT with leather, sunroof, Captain chairs in the 2nd row. Have the Antimatter blue. Thing will get up and go. I think a lot of the 3.5 issues were first gen trucks. We average about 18-19 on highway going 75-80.

We test drove a used one yesterday that had this problem. Didn’t know if it was common or not. Also seemed jerky when put in and out of gear. Sound familiar?

~120K miles, you will be replacing a timing chain/belt. That seems to be the MO of the Eco-Boosts to date.

Just get an extended warranty. At least they figured out the issue with the 10 speeds and can repair them now.

Haven't noticed anything funny from the transmission. She's only got about 30k on it though.

Wife's got one with 50k on it and so far we love it. Zero problems and transmission shifts just fine going into gear.

We have one and every so often I’ll feel it jerk a bit going in and out of gear. Not enough for me to take it to the shop yet though.

Other than that we love it. The middle bench seat with all 3 seats adjusting independently is a lifesaver with our 3 young kids.

We have a 2018 and 2022 and love them both.

85k on the 18 3k miles on the 22, we've had no real issues.

                        Bought them new.

My wife has a 2018 model with about 77,000 miles. It has been in the shop two different times for the timing chain problem. It has a pinhole coolant leak somewhere that I haven’t found - I haven’t looked very hard for it yet but I have added coolant. And it jerks when shifting into reverse. Otherwise it’s been a good vehicle. It is comfortable on road trips and gets pretty good fuel mileage.

My wife has the same expy and we had the same coolant leak. Smelled it for a long time before finding it as it got worse. I’ll bet $$$ it’s the heater hose/s. Dealer wants $1,500 to fix but its a $150 part. I changed both heater hoses to be safe. Apparently, when they go in and repair the cam-phaser issue, they move the heater hoses and leaks begin around the plastic “y” sections. It’s pretty common.

I have a 2018 Expedition Max with only 60,000 miles on it. So far, I’ve I had to replace the cam-phaser once and the front cup holder twice. The cup holder was held in place by a glorified rubber band that broke. Luckily, the cam-phaser was under warranty. Also, the sunroof doesn’t always close properly and I’ve experienced the jerky reverse.

With all of that being said, it’s a nice, roomy car that is great for road trips. It also tows well and I can fit a whole sheet of plywood in the back with the seats folded down. In my opinion, its more practical and nicer than a suburban.
