My first Ultramatic was a wooden coke bottle crate. (the first stand and fill) Upgraded to a toilet plunger in a 5-gallon bucket hanging by a rope in a tree. Cleaned a corner of the barn a while back and found them and chunked them. They've come a long way since then.

I might actually make a few this year. I have several buckets laying around. I haven’t used a feeder in many years because of the hassle. I won’t worry about these much if I do make them. They will either have corn in them or they won’t when I get to the stand. Either way, won’t make much difference.

There's still a few hanging on our lease from where the land owner hunted years ago.

              Then why bother?lol

I remember dad and the guys having a couple with coat hangers hanging out the bottom of the bucket, with a empty butter tub hooked to the end of the coat hanger.

I remember those well. And I remember the ones that had a big "spinner" thingy underneath that was supposed to turn when the wind would blow. Don't think those worked very well though.

My dad used those for years until the spin feeders became common. He always hung a piece of oil based painted metal from the bottom to catch the wind and for the deer to bump. Some of his old antlers that I have, still have the green paint he used on them from the bucks hitting it with their antlers.

This was my first feeder, was told deer could get the corn out of the small squares but cows couldn't.

I was still running an OnTime unit until this year—-can’t decide if I want to resurrect it or put it in recycle.

                            Old fellas and feeders question

We used them.. first feeders we had were 5 gallon buckets or metal cans with a broom handle section sticking out of the bottom ….or even a straight piece of cedar when we moved to the hill country. We’d drive 4 or nails across/through one end and cut out a hole big enough to get the stick slid through and some corn out when the deer nosed it. The nails held the stick in and moved the corn around. Never lasted very long before empty but we didn’t know any better and kept filling them. Shot some deer over them too.
