This is just my armchair opinion, but they haven't confirmed that was the cause yet. Which is why I am really interested in the investigation. Also, how has hockey dealt with this type of injury? I'd imagine a goalie already has a pad for this area. But goalies are way less mobile than a cornerback/safety/wide receiver, heck even runningbacks, and we all know those guys shy away from too many pads.

I am wondering if there is some other part of the hit we can't quite see on the videos out there now that was the cause.

Not sure about Hockey, but my oldest son is a high school catcher and their chest protectors have some sort of heart guard pad built in. I'm pretty sure it is required that they wear only chest protectors with the heart guard pads in them.
